Glenbrook South girls shoot lights out against New Trier

Practice paid off in Glenbrook South's girls basketball victory last Friday over New Trier.

After practice, Titans guard Chloe Gonzalez said, the team's 3-point shooters will stick around to put up more shots. Sometimes they'll launch a bunch of them from different points on the court. Sometimes it's just a few.

"We try to make just a couple 3s at the end so we feel good going into a game, or I guess confident," Gonzalez said.

Playing with confidence Jan. 27 in the Titan Dome in Glenview, they made more than a couple 3s in a 70-55 Central Suburban League South victory over the Trevians.

Glenbrook South made 11 of 21 3-point shot attempts and 26 of 46 field goal tries overall, starting fast and building a 26-point lead over the Trevians at one point in the fourth quarter.

Gonzalez, Gina Davorija and Sidney Rogers each laced three long balls and Dana Ralston and Paige Simon made one apiece.

"First of all our confidence level was very high," said Glenbrook South coach Scott Nemecek, citing a 36-35 win over a ranked Loyola squad on Jan. 24.

"The girls were excited, you could see a pop in their step, no one was afraid to share the ball and let it fly," he said.

"Every shot they took from 3 I thought were excellent shots. They were in rhythm, the girls can make those shots, the ball got to them efficiently. It was fortunate that it started out that well, because if it doesn't these guys (New Trier) can make it hard on us."

A team that makes 8 of 19 3-pointers, like New Trier (16-11, 4-5) did on Friday, will win a lot of games.

But after Davorija grabbed an offensive rebound and Rogers followed with a 3 from the top of the key 30 seconds into the game, Glenbrook South (21-6, 7-2) was off and running.

While the Trevians missed their first six shots, Glenbrook South began the game on a 12-0 run capped by Rogers' second 3 of the game.

"They get in the middle and then they kick out and that's where the open 3s came from," said New Trier coach Teri Rodgers. "That was the problem in the first half. Sid and Gina do such a good job of getting in there, drawing the help, kicking it out."

A 12-point deficit can certainly be managed, and Trevians juniors Sela Klein and Kate Saccaro combined for three 3s and a 7-of-14 second quarter for New Trier.

Glenbrook South, though, was just getting warmed up. Bolstered off the bench by Ralston, Simon and Anjali Nimmagadda, with center Anna Rosenberger scoring inside, the Titans posted 25 second-quarter points for a 40-24 halftime lead.

Davorija and Simon combined for three of their team's five 3-pointers in the frame, and 10-of-18 shooting overall.

"I think tonight we lost players in transition, we didn't box out, and that's where they got their easy looks," Saccaro said.

The teams' shooting stats were identical in the third quarter, each scoring 16 points, but Glenbrook South's Christina Korompilas paced a 12-2 run to start the fourth quarter for a 68-42 lead with 5:02 left to play.

It gave Nemecek the ability to rest Rogers after she scored the last of her 16 points still with more than six minutes remaining.

"I think we could have boxed out a little bit more," said New Trier's Klein, "but I also think there was a lot of effort and heart left out on the court. But when a team is shooting 11 for 21 (on 3s) it's hard, especially when it's the point guard, because she's got control of the entire game."

Davorija scored 17 points, Gonzalez 11 and Korompilas 10 for Glenbrook South. New Trier's Rachael Zacks, who made three 3-pointers herself, led all scorers with 19 points, ahead of Saccaro with 12 and Klein with 10.

Both New Trier and Glenbrook South have one final CSL South game remaining. New Trier hopes to pull even with Evanston for third place while Glenbrook South faces Niles West with the possibility of a first-place tie with Maine South. At 8-1, Maine South visits Glenbrook North (17-8, 3-6) on Friday.

"Our girls have had a great season, and getting that win Tuesday (over Loyola) was sort of a feature win, so hopefully it's going to keep us rolling," Nemecek said.
