Glenbrook North routs Maine East to stay unbeaten

Glenbrook North center Patrick Schaller and guard Josh Fridman, both juniors, gave visiting Maine East a 1-2 punch Saturday afternoon in Northbrook.

In the Central Suburban crossover the Spartans cruised past the Demons 70-38.

“Something told me that Schaller would have a good game,” said Maine East coach Segio Muro.

Schaller scored 19 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Fridman tallied 15 points and handed out 7 of the Spartans' 15 assists.

“I think the biggest difference from Thanksgiving to now has been my confidence level,” said Schaller. “I think my game is pretty well rounded at this point but I think my post play has been my strong point. My jump shot has improved.”

“Patrick has been with us since he was a freshman so he's taken some beatings on the court from older guys,” said Glenbrook North coach Quin Hayes. “His coming out was against Evanston three or four games ago and he hasn't stopped. He plays with a chip on his shoulder and with confidence. We have a good inside outside game with this team. This team is very unselfish. It's a close group. They just want to win.”

Maine East (5-4) led briefly 8-5 before Glenbrook North (10-0) reeled off a 19-0 run to build a 24-15 lead with 1:28 left in the first quarter.

Schaller and Fridman each scored 9 points in the quarter and the Spartans never looked back. Fridman dished out four of his assists and converted a steal into a basket during the run.

The Spartans turned 7 Blue Demon turnovers into 11 points in the first quarter. A 32-11 rebounding edge also benefitted Glenbrook North.

Glenbrook North led 44-23 at halftime and 65-28 after three quarters.

Owen Giannoulias added 8 points. Dylan Goldin and Sam Lappin scored six off the bench.

Fridman, an up-and-coming player, sees a god season for the Spartans.

“We didn't want to have a letdown game after our win on Friday night,” said Fridman. “Our game starts with defense. If we have the defensive intensity the rest falls into place. It helps that we have balance. Nobody cares who scores the points.”

Maine East was led by Daryl Gaddi and Neel Patel with 8 points. Jalan Alphonse scored 6 points.

“Things didn't go according to plan this weekend,” said Muro. “This was good for our boys to go through some adversity early on. This is the first time this season that we lost back-to-back games. We can learn from this. Despite this weekend we're playing well. The players have bought into what we want to do as a team. We're changing our mindset.”
