Seniors shine in Bartlett's win over Streamwood

Bartlett basketball coach Jim Wolfsmith didn't face any problems when deciding upon his starting lineup for the Hawks' Senior Night against Streamwood Friday night.

Having 5 seniors on the varsity roster certainly helped make Wolfsmith's choice an easy one.

Seniors Bryce Kim, Jacob Magnanao, Conrad Luczynski, Jesse Singh, and Ian Smith combined for 58 points during the Hawks' 78-49 Upstate Eight Conference triumph over the Sabres (4-26, 3-14).

"It was perfect," said Wolfsmith. "I didn't have to worry about subbing. There's good balance between Conrad's (Luczynski) size and a bunch of guards. Ian (Smith) and Jacob (Magnanao) can both handle the point, and Bryce (Kim) can help there as well."

The 7-foot, 3-inch Luczynski scored 10 of his game-high 22 points in the first quarter as Bartlett (22-6, 15-2) grabbed a 29-15 lead.

Luczynski added 17 rebounds, 4 assists and a pair of blocked shots as the Hawks posted their fourth consecutive win.

"It's always a fun time on Senior Night," said Luczynski. "It's kind of sad because it's all going so fast. I've known the other seniors since middle school. They're all good guys."

Singh, who scored 6 first-quarter points, chipped in with 13 points, while Smith added 12 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Kim and Magnanao scored 6 and 5 points, respectively, as the Hawks built a 42-25 halftime lead and eventually finished with a running clock after taking a 68-37 advantage with 7:17 remaining.

"The seniors have had a great run," said Wolfsmith. "I thought they played really well."

Junior Martin McCarthy added 7 points off the bench on 3-of-3 shooting from the field with 3 rebounds.

Bartlett finished the game shooting 54% from the field (32 for 59), led by Luczynski's 10-for-15 performance.

"Conrad is shooting over 60% from the floor (for the season)," said Wolfsmith. "As a team, we're shooting better than 55%. We're good around the basket, and Kelton (McEwen) is shooting better than 40% from the 3-point stripe. We're shooting the ball well.

"If we can avoid turnovers - that seems to be our bugaboo."

With 2 regular-season games remaining, the Hawks have an opportunity for 24 victories heading into postseason play.

"We got off to a sloppy start to the season - not playing to our full potential - but we're getting there," said Luczynski.

Cris Calderon led Streamwood with 21 points, including five 3-pointers.

"They're just better than us," Sabres coach Kent Payne said of the Hawks.

"We can't guard that guy (Luczynski). Seven-three is seven-three, and we have a 6-footer guarding him."
