Prospect routs Grayslake Central behind 3-point barrage

One day after hitting 11 3-pointers to open the Blenner Classic tourney at St. Viator on Monday with a win over Resurrection, Prospect's girls basketball team came back with double-digit field goals from long distance again on Tuesday.

The Knights (11-2) connected for 10 3-pointers from eight players en route to a 60-19 triumph over Grayslake Central.

Leading the way with 2 3-pointers apiece were Nicole Atteo and Jessica Reizer, who was one of three Knights to score 9 points along with Macy Zei and Andie Will (3 rebounds). All four had 2 assists.

In all, 12 Knights scored at least 2 points as Prospect rolled to its 11th win in 13 games.

"I was really proud of all our girls coming in and executing the same way, with no drop-offs," said Prospect coach Matt Weber. "When you are able to keep the same defensive pressure when you are subbing, it gives you such an advantage.

"Grayslake Central is a great-coached team. It's a great program coach (Steve Iken) has up there. I thought our kids executed our game plan exactly the way we wanted. They (Grayslake Central) have some nice big players but our ball pressure made it hard for them to get inside and take advantage. We always have to focus on defense."

With the score tied 3-3, Will's 3-pointer with 4:34 left in the first quarter started the Knights on a 10-2 run and they never looked back. The big early rally included a steal and layup by Reizer, a driving scoop lay in by Will and 2 free throws by Katie Neal that made it 13-5.

A 3-pointer by Kathyrn Keehn (4 rebounds) with 3 seconds left gave Prospect a 19-8 lead after one quarter.

Zei had a big second quarter as the Knights' senior guard scored 7 points, the final 3 coming on a 3-pointer with 1:06 left in the half for a 32-11 lead. Zei followed that with a steal and assist on the fastbreak to sophomore Skylar Splinter to put Prospect ahead 34-12 lead at the break.

"We're just trying to keep doing the same things," said Zei, whose team leads the Mid-Suburban East with a 3-0 record. "We've had lot of luck recently and we're just trusting each other and doing what we do."

"When we're coming up with the defensive game plan, the majority of times it's Macy guarding the opponent's top guard," Weber said. "She is able to bring a whole lot of defensive pressure that not a lot of people at the high school level can. She is a great defender and she works her tail off. And she is a great teammate. She wants everyone to be successful."

Prospect built the lead to 44-14 when Atteo hit her first of two 3-pointers with 3:12 left in the third quarter, initiating the running clock.

Monica Schleg led the Rams (3-11) with 10 points while Katie Dinsmore added 4.

"We fought," Iken said. "We were short-handed (injuries and illness) with only eight kids and one of our starters was making her first start of the year coming back from an injury. But we didn't give up. Prospect is a good team and well-coached.

"To our kids' credit, they played hard to the final buzzer. Everyone goes through this and you just have to fight to the next day. We just have to stick with it until we are healthy."
