No harp, no foul: Krutwig displays talents on Patrick's show

The latest suburban celebrity is Loyola center Cameron Krutwig.

The Algonquin native and Jacobs High School graduate was a guest on the syndicated "Dan Patrick Show" the day after helping lead the Ramblers past No. 1 seed Illinois in the NCAA Tournament.

Krutwig sang a duet of "Private Eyes" with Patrick's booker "Fritzy," and did a brief Will Ferrell impersonation from the movie "Semi-Tough." Sadly, though, he was unable to play the harmonica during the Zoom call with Patrick, since he left it in his Indianapolis hotel room.

Patrick asked Krutwig to return and play the harmonica and promised to try to get Ferrell on the show with Krutwig on Tuesday. Will it actually happen? Who knows, but Loyola is set to play Oregon State on Saturday in the regional semifinals, barring any health issues.

Here are a few excerpts from the interview:

Patrick: Why the mustache?

Krutwig: "It's been about eight months, it kind of started in quarantine and (I) just kind of let it run. Now people are falling in love with it. Back in my freshman year, I was rocking the mutton chops during the Final Four run. Now I switched it up and went with the mustache. It's just something fun to do and kind of adds to the lore, I guess."

DP: Describe your playing style?

CK: "High IQ, understand the game. I'm not going to beat anyone with blazing speed or I'm not going to jump over anybody. There's so many different ways to play the game of basketball. It's not all about athleticism and speed and quickness.

"I hate to kind of toot my own horn here, but I feel like I'm making other guys better on the floor. I'm attracting attention, I'm setting dudes up. I'm listed as a center, but, to me, in basketball you've got to be able to dribble, pass and shoot. I've always kind of been that way."

DP: Still feel like an underdog?

CK: "Maybe in 2018, we kind of snuck up on people. People kind of underestimated us. Now it's no secret. No one's underestimating us. When you play the Ramblers, you know you're in for a good game. I don't really think we're underdogs anymore. I'm just happy we proved that (Final Four run) wasn't a fluke."

DP: You ruined a lot of brackets. Feel bad about it?

CK: "No, I don't feel bad at all. I feel pretty good. I think every game we've played so far, we've played with that edge, that chip on our shoulder, we've come out and we've done it. We all wanted that one (Sunday).

"We were at the Indy 500 Speedway for Selection Sunday and we saw the first two brackets. We had a feeling we were going to be an 8 or a 9. Then we saw Illinois as the 1 and before it even came on (the screen), we were like, 'Here it comes.'

"Not that we were circling that game, but when we beat Georgia Tech and it was time for Illinois, we really wanted that game."
