Libertyville reaches NSC final as Huber eclipses 1,000

It wasn't a matter of if it was going to happen, but a matter of when for Holy Cross recruit Lauren Huber to join the 1,000-point club.

Libertyville's four-year varsity player really had no clue when she was going to hit 1,000 points. She was so close late in the second quarter just being a point short and she attempted a couple of 3-point shots in the third quarter.

Huber finally reached the big mark by draining a 3-pointer with 4:19 left in the third quarter and followed it up with another one 36 seconds later and finished with 13 points and 7 assists for 1,007 points in her career.

Top-seeded Libertyville topped Lake Forest 63-31 in the semifinals of the North Suburban Conference girls basketball tournament in Libertyville on Wednesday night.

Huber was given a ceremonial basketball with 1,000 on it after the game by her coach, Greg Pedersen, and athletic director John Woods.

"I knew it was coming up towards the end of the season," Huber said. "I had no clue it was coming up. I know my shots happen and it's so streaky. It really was a guesstimate. I'm just happy I got it and it's all because of the team. It's nice to share it with the team. Everybody shares the ball."

Huber also is trying to catch up to a former Libertyville graduate Teri Rodgers (1987) in all-time assists.

"Honestly, scoring is hard for me," Huber said. "I think I get my energy through rebounding and passing the ball. It gets me energized."

Emily Fisher led the Wildcats (15-2) with 14 points and 5 blocked shots and Marianna Morrissey added 13 points.

"Lauren has had an incredible career," Pedersen said. "She plays an all-around game and an unselfish game. When we get to honor her for individual accomplishments, we take every advantage of that. It's great to see her teammates celebrate that and nice for people in the stands to celebrate it. It's a good feeling for everybody."

Lake Forest (6-6) was led by Tricia Gray with 15 points.

Libertyville will next take on Stevenson (16-1) for the NSC tourney title Saturday 3 p.m. at Libertyville.
