South Elgin stays hot, tops Jacobs

Combining for 44 points, Drew Cwik and Aaron Wofford each scored 22 points as South Elgin moved its record to 7-1 with a nonconference 58-49 win over Jacobs in Algonquin Saturday afternoon.

Cwik, who scored 20 of 22 points in the first half, connected on 6-of-10 from beyond the arc during the first 16 minutes.

"Looking at the film, I found spots I could get open shots," said Cwik. "In the second half, Jacobs guarded me tougher. Aaron really stepped up."

Wofford, 3-of-5 from 3-point range, scored 12 points in the first half and 10 in the third quarter.

"Jacobs was keying on Drew and I was able to find some opportunities," said Wofford. "It has been so much fun this season, We are glad to have a season. We have great chemistry on this team."

South Elgin coach Brett Johnson praised his two sharpshooters.

"Both Drew and Aaron stepped up," said Johnson. "They were able to get space and get good shots."

Nursing a 15-14 lead after one quarter, the Storm seized control of the game in the second quarter.

With Cwik scoring 12 points on four 3-pointers and Wofford scoring 7, South Elgin outscored Jacobs (2-4) 23-13 in the decisive quarter and led 38-27 at intermission.

The Storm's biggest lead of the game was 50-33 with a minute left in the third quarter on a layup by Wofford.

"I really liked our defensive effort," said Johnson. "I was excited about our hustle and energy."

Jacobs coach Jim Roberts called the second quarter the turning point in the game.

"After the second quarter, South Elgin had an 8- to 14-point lead the rest of the game," said the Jacobs coach. "We didn't do a good job of running their shooters off the arc, We are just not tough enough right now. We are not responding to adversity very well. We are shooting for the (Fox Valley) conference tournament at the end of the year."

Nick McCoy led the Golden Eagles with 13 including 3 treys while Zach Leahy tallied 11 with a pair of 3s.

The Eagles played without senior Robert Pennel, who averages 12 points a game.

"We miss Rob's leadership," said Roberts. "When things go bad, he gets us back on track. We hope to have him back Monday."
