Huber's big day leads Glenbard East past Glenbard South

Glenbard East senior guard Lauren Huber is back on the path toward achieving her career goals.

When the IHSA announced the restart of the basketball season, Huber was relieved to get the opportunity to add to her storied career.

Huber showed her vastly improved game on Saturday with an impressive effort in the season opener against Glenbard South. Huber scored a game-high 24 points to go with 11 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 assists to lift the Rams to a 50-39 victory in Glen Ellyn.

Senior forward Emily Ryan finished with 15 points, including two key back-to-back baskets late in the fourth to slow down a Raiders' rally.

Huber, a three-year varsity starter, earned her first career victory over Glenbard South, moved closer to the 1,000-point career mark and is now within sight of the school's all-time point record.

Huber said the opener was a surreal event with all the COVID-19 protocols but she welcomed a chance to play.

"It's been a big rivalry, always fun and competitive," Huber said. "At this point I feel it's more comparing what you have to nothing than comparing what you have to what you had. I'm happy we are back playing and together as a team."

The Huber and Ryan connection fueled the Rams throughout the opener. The Raiders were helpless trying to slow down the athletic and active Huber. She scored in bunches, leading the Rams back into the game after falling into an early deficit.

The 5-foot-7 Huber put the Rams on her back and carried them to a 25-24 halftime lead.

She set the tone for a big afternoon by scoring eight of her team's first 12 points, and tallied three baskets in a late second-quarter flurry to finish the half with 18 points.

Huber remains uncommitted but she's gained interest from Division III schools and mentioned she's looking into a possible walk-on role in Division I.

"It's been hard getting on (college) campuses," Huber said. "It's been hard, but I'm looking to get on more campuses."

The Raiders stayed afloat by relying on the 3-point shooting of Iman Sellers (12 points) and Brittany Miller. Senior guard Lauren Cohen tallied 11 points but left the game with a lower back injury and did not play in the final 3:10.

"In the first half, Huber got a ton of steals and rebounds," Glenbard South coach Morgan Eufrasio said. "It was our first game, we just didn't play well. It was hard. We've only had five days of practice. We value our defense. It just wasn't there. We have to pass the ball better."
