Can Fremd pull off upset, or will defending champ Maine West return to Redbird?

Two powerhouses who know all about postseason success will face off in Monday's Class 4A Conant supersectional.

Playing just a few miles from Woodfield Mall, this one is a shopper's delight for girls basketball fans.

The 7 p.m. tip-off features Central Suburban League championship Maine West (30-3) and Mid-Suburban League champ Fremd (27-7).

Fremd coach Dave Yates had the Vikings playing in a sectional title game for the seventh time in eight seasons when they defeated Lake Forest last Thursday.

In her fourth season as Maine West's coach, Kim de Marigny is appearing in her fourth supersectional, and is a winner of her last two, including last year when the Warriors went on to win the state championship and finish the season 35-0.

The game will be televised on the Comcast Network (channel 100) on Tuesday, March 3 and Wednesday, March 4 at 7 p.m.

The last time the two teams met, Feb. 8 in Des Plaines, the game was shown live on the same channel.

That game was won by 59-42 by Maine West.

But de Marigny knows that late regular-season nonconference game means nothing on Monday night.

"We played them three weeks ago," said de Marigny. "You know, nothing matters at tournament time. So anything that you did previously you can erase and get ready for a new battle."

This supersectional features no less than four future Division I women's basketball players.

McDonald's All-American Angela Dugalic averages more than 20 points for the Warriors. She will play for nationally-ranked Oregon this fall.

Fremd features three committed D-I recruits and one junior who has received D-I offers.

Vikings senior Emily Klaczek, the two-time reigning MSL West Player of the Year, will play at Alabama-Birmingham. Fellow senior Olivia Hill is Bowling Green-bound and junior Ruthie Montella has committed to the College of William & Mary.

Montella's classmate, Grace LaBarge, has received D-I offers.

Dugalic rang up a game-high 21 points when West won four weeks ago over Fremd.

"We got to see why Angela is a McDonald's All American. She impacts that game in so many ways," said Yates, whose Vikings were back-to-back Class 4A state runners-up in 2015 and 2016. "What we learned from that game is that they are a very, very good team. We will need to play at a very high level to compete with them."

Maine West is 125-9 the last four years and Dugalic has played in every game for a program record of 134.

She won her final home game when West topped Evanston 43-42 in overtime in its own sectional final on Thursday.

"I'm so happy to win my last game on my home court and for it be a sectional championship," Dugalic said after the game. "Not a lot of people can say that. I owe so much to my teammates, our coaches and trainers. They prepared us so much for this day."

Yates calls the first meeting with Maine West a turning point for his team.

"In terms of our season, I think that game was a turning point for us," he said. "I think it was beneficial to play them regardless of the outcome because I think that game was a key point in our season.

"We had to take a long hard look in the mirror and fix some things for the stretch run. I think since that game, we have been a better team and sometimes you can learn a lot from a loss."

The winner of Monday's game will face the winner of the South Elgin sectional (Lake Park vs. Dundee-Crown) in Friday's 5:30 p.m. semifinal at Illinois State's Redbird Arena.

"The key is taking care of the basketball," Yates said. "We did not do that last time and they made us pay for it dearly.

"They are a great defensive team with the best rim protector in the state. They are very good at converting your mistakes into easy baskets."
