Vernon Hills, Stevenson advance to regional finals

Freshman post Grace Koepke had 16 points, 4 rebounds and 4 blocked shots, and Vernon Hills' girls basketball team defeated Fenton 58-29 in a semifinal of the Class 3A Antioch regional on Wednesday night.

Daniella Jarrell added 10 points, all in the first half, 7 rebounds and 7 steals for the second-seeded Cougars (19-10), who advanced to Friday's 7 p.m. regional final. Freshman Alexa Cieslinski contributed 9 points off the bench.

Lauren Shores' 3-pointer helped Vernon Hills jump out to a 14-4 lead after one quarter. The Cougars were up 36-10 at halftime and 54-21 after three.

No. 15 Fenton (12-21) shot 2 of 19 from three-point range in the first half and finished 5 of 30 for the game.

Sophia Haska led the Bison with 7 points, including a 3, and 11 rebounds.

Stevenson 70, Grant 51: At Lake Forest, the fourth-seeded Patriots captured the Class 4A regional semifinal.

Simone Sawyer lead all scorers with 22 points. Avery King added 17 and Ana Bardic 11 for the Patriots (25-7), who have now won five straight and 13 of their last 14.

Stevenson will play No. 5 Lake Forest Friday night for the regional title.

Kaitlyn Flader led No. 13 Grant (16-15) with 13 points while Jazzlyn Linbo and MaCalyn Flores added 11 each and Kylie Whyte had 10.
