Thompson, Barrington kncok off Buffalo Grove

Taylor Thompson got her Barrington girls basketball team rolling early in its final regular-season game on Tuesday night.

The Missour-St. Louis recruit tossed in 15 of her game-high 21 points in the first 13 minutes as Barrington built a 9-point lead at half and then held off visiting Buffalo Grove for a 53-43 decision in the Mid-Suburban League second-place crossover game.

It was the second win for the Fillies (20-9) against the Bison (17-11) this season.

"Taylor Thompson is a heck of a player," said Bison coach Steve Kolodziej. "And she did an outstanding job. We struggled early and kind of let her get going. And that is a girl who is too good to let get going."

Thompson had it going on the boards, too, where she grabbed a game-high 14 for one of her many multiple double-doubles of her fourth varsity season.

"I felt that Taylor Thompson showed again why she is as talented as anybody in this league," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "I'm very proud of the season she is having and the way these kids are playing together."

"We really had to work on their zone and break it down," said Thompson, whose 3-pointer at the first-quarter buzzer gave Barrington a 16-14 lead. "And we had to work on offense. We had to take care of the basketball and keep the ball moving. It was really nice having my teammates be able to share the ball and get it inside to me."

Macy Floro's 10-footer gave BG an 8-3 lead but the Fillies came back to tie at 8-8 with Thompson's bank shot and a 3-pointer by Shanna Turczynski (6 points).

Floro's driving 8 footer to start the second quarter tied the game at 16 before Katie Tomczyk's 3-pointer got the hosts back in front 19-16.

Barrington led 30-21 at half but BG came back to tie it 36-36 after three quarters.

Freshman Sophie Swan collected 11 points, including seven in the fourth quarter when Barrington opened with an 11-3 run.

Laura Mahlum had 5 points and 4 rebounds and Anna Mae King had a key 3-pointer for the hosts.

"Buffalo Grove is such a well-coached team," Barreiro said. "It's never going to be an easy game playing them with Floro (9 points) and Kendra Lee (14 points), who I have so much respect for. I was really proud of our kids and how we responded in the fourth quarter after they came back and tied it up on us."

Freshman Kora Kipley also had 9 points for BG.

"We were chasing early," said Kolodziej. "We were flat. I know the kids (MSL East co-champs) were disappointed not playing Wednesday (for the MSL title) and you could kind of tell it looked that way.

"Hopefully we can learn from this and understand that is don't have more energy next week, we'll be going home against a good Prospect team (in the regional).

"Barrington did a great job. They're playing such efficient basketball right now. They don't turn the ball over very often and do a really good job handling different types of things you throw at them."
