Dundee-Crown routs McHenry to keep FVC lead
Dundee-Crown's stifling defense and balanced offense led to an easy 57-36 win over McHenry in Fox Valley Conference play on the Chargers' senior night in Carpentersville Monday.
"This game honors toughness and D-C honored mental toughness tonight," said McHenry coach Rob Niemic. "We didn't make shots and we played one good quarter. You need to play four good quarters to beat Dundee-Crown. We beat ourselves tonight and they beat us. It was a double whammy."
The Chargers (21-6, 13-1) placed 3 players in double figure scoring.
Junior Alyssa Crenshaw paced D-C with 13 points and 9 rebounds while Cassidy Randl added 11 and Katelyn Skibinski scored 10.
"We came out on senior night with a strong fighting mentality," said Skibinski. "We got off to a strong lead and got a lot of layups. We set up our offense and got high percentage shots. We are taking it one game at a time and want to finish the conference strong and get ready for the regionals."
After McHenry (20-7, 8-6) took a 3-0 lead on a 3-pointer by Ashley Wachter, the Chargers scored the final 11 points of the quarter. Randl and Alaina Azar buried 3-pointers, Skibinski scored 3 points on a basket and a free throw and Payton Schmidt scored on a driving layup as Dundee-Crown led 11-3 after 8 minutes.
The Chargers scored the first 4 points of the second quarter to complete a 15-0 run. Hannah Koehlert came off the bench canned a baseline 10-footer and Crenshaw scored on a putback as the Chargers held a 15-3 advantage with 6:33 left in the first half.
McHenry, which went scoreless for 8 minutes and 31 seconds, broke the scoring drought on a putback by Valparaiso recruit Ava Interrante to make the score 15-5 with six minutes left in the second quarter.
"We came out hungry and played very good help line defense," said D-C coach Sarah Miller. "We did a great job of closing the gaps on defense."
The Warriors were able to climb within 24-19 on a 3-pointer by Interrante with 6:45 left in the third quarter but couldn't get any closer. The Chargers responded with an 8-0 run to seize control of the game.
Crenshaw and Randl scored 4 points each as the Chargers opened up a 32-19 lead with 4:47 left in the third quarter.
D-C's biggest lead was 51-27 on a layup by Emily Oldham with 3:18 left in the game.
The Chargers, who garnered assists on 12 on 25 baskets, were led by Payton Schmidt who scored 8 points with 5 assists.
"I really liked the way we shared the ball," said Miller. "Literally everybody who played did something positive. It was a great team effort."
Interrante led McHenry with 12 points while Wachter scored 11.
