D-C wins tourney finale on Schmidt's buzzer-beater; Bannerman hits milestone

Being a 4-year varsity performer, Payton Schmidt knew exactly what the situation was.

Schmidt's layup at the buzzer gave Dundee-Crown an exhilarating 51-49 win over New Trier to claim seventh place Monday night in the 37th Annual Komaromy Classic Christmas Tournament hosted by D-C.

Schmidt's game-winner came off a perfect pass from Katelyn Skibinski.

The Chargers (11-2) broke a 2-game losing skid with the last-second heroics from Schmidt.

The senior guard scored Dundee-Crown's final 6 points of the game.

"I was aware of the clock and how much time was left," said Schmidt. "I wanted to get the shot up with 2 seconds remaining. I got up just in time. It is an amazing feeling. Katelyn made a great play to get me the ball. The two losses were a wake-up call. We played our game tonight. This is a great win going into the new year and back into conference (Fox Valley) play."

D-C coach Sarah Miller praised Schmidt's effort.

"She is a 4-year player and she showed great leadership and poise tonight," said Miller. "It will be a special moment for Payton."

Alyssa Crenshaw paced the Chargers with 20 points including two 3-pointers and 9 rebounds.

"We lost to two state-ranked teams in Lake Park and Fenwick," said Miller. "Tonight was a good bounce back game. We did the little things necessary to win."

Arysia Harris came off the Chargers bench to score 9.

The Trevians got 11 points from Abigail Ryan and 10 by Tinah Hong.

Buffalo Grove 56, Hampshire 46: Junior Kelby Bannerman scored her 1,000th career point and 24 tallied for the game in a losing cause for the Whip-Purs (9-8).
