Williams' layup gives Palatine consolation title

Trailing by 6 points with 1:28 left, Palatine's girls basketball team came back for a 39-37 win over Schaumburg to take the consolation championship at the Bill Neibch Falcon Classic at Wheaton North on Saturday.

Olivia Radtke hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 1 point with 45 seconds left.

A pair of free throws by Kayla Miotk (12 points, 6 rebounds) with 18 seconds left tied the game at 37.

Radtke then poked ball away with eight seconds left and Julianna Mandarino scooped it up.

Mandarino got the ball to sophomore Caitlin Williams (6 points) who went the rest of the way for a layup with two seconds left for the game-winner.

Madi Stark led Palatine (7-7) with 13 points.

The Saxons (7-8) were led by Alyssa Orozco (14 points, 7 rebounds), Katie Smith (12) and Jackie Drs. (5 rebounds). Senior guard Talia Torosian was named all-tourney.

Prospect 47, Hononegah 42: Eliot Dojutrek scored 15 points and Andie Will added 13 with 9 rebounds, 3 assists and three 3-pointers for the Knights (6-7) in consolation play at the Komaromy Holiday Classic.

The Knights snapped a four-game losing streak.

"We broke the streak and got our win," said Prospect coach Marie Miller. "It was so exciting to see the little things fall into place and have the hard work pay off. No loss has been forgotten but we are a better team today and from now on because of each one."

"We got strong guard leadership from Macy Zei (4 rebounds, 3 steals, 4 assists), Andie Will, Eliot Dojutrek and Sarah Skaggs as we continue to work to get better."

Naperville Central 59, Buffalo Grove 57: Kendra Lee had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Buffalo Grove (8-7) in the consolation semifinal at the Komaromy Classic.

Other top performers for BG were Macy Floro (14 points, 5 assists, 2 steals), Megan Fontanetta (11 points, 5 rebounds) and Kora Kipley (8 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists).

Barrington 59, New Trier 52: Senior Taylor Thompson poured in a season-high 29 points with 15 rebounds as Barrington improved to 10-5 and 2-1 at the Komaromy Classic.

Other key performers for the Filles were freshman Sophie Swanson (18 points, 8 rebounds), Laura Mahlum (7 points, 9 rebounds) and Shanna Turczynski (6 rebounds).

Lyons Township 67, Hersey 59: The Huskies (11-6) fell to 1-2 in the Montini Christmas tourney.

Fremd 50, Oak Park River Forest 34: Grace LaBarge (15 points), Olivia Hill (8 points, 13 rebounds), Katie Hansen (9 points, 8 rebounds) led Fremd (10-3) to its first win in the Montini Christmas tournament in Lombard.
