Warren stuns Peoria Manual at Pontiac

Juan De La Cruz and Adnan Sarancic each scored 15 points, Seamus Mellican had a double-double, and Warren's boys basketball team upset fourth-seeded Peoria Manual 54-45 in opening-round action of the 87th Pontiac Holiday Tournament on Thursday.

De La Cruz and Sarancic each hit a 3-pointer and grabbed 6 rebounds. Mellican had 11 points (4-of-4 shooting from the floor) and 11 rebounds. The win advanced the Blue Devils (4-6) to Friday's 1 p.m. game against Benet Academy.

Carmel 67, Champaign Central 63: At Centralia, Asher Jackson and Kimahri Wilson helped lead the Corsairs to the tournament-opening win.

Jackson scored 18 points, including three 3-pointers, while Wilson had 17 points, 5 assists and 4 steals.

Kylen Beals and Syone Usma-Harper (5 steals) added 12 points apiece for Carmel (6-5), which won the fourth time in its last five games.

Grant 64, Prairie Ridge 61: At Jacobs, Mikal Ashley poured in 20 points, including four 3-pointers, as the Bulldogs won their first game in the Hinkle Holiday Classic.

Chad Kiesgen added 16 points for Grant (3-9, 1-2).

Lakes 60, Jones 47: At Maine East, the Eagles opened up a 19-3 lead in the first quarter and led throughout during their opening game in the tournament.

Jake Sanders and Tylor Gunther led Lakes with 12 points each, and Aidan Sage added 10. The Eagles (4-6) continue tournament play Friday at 3 p.m. against Maine East.

Vernon Hills 50, Von Steuben 35: At Maine East, the Cougars pulled away in the second half to win their opening game in the tournament.

Jack Barszcz led Vernon Hills with 22 points. Tony Brown (12 points) and Erik Rimas (10) also scored in double figures for the Cougars (7-5), who play Oak Forest at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Washington 58, Lake Zurich 43: At Pekin, the Bears lost their opening game in the 55th annual tournament.

Lake Zurich (4-5) will play Mt. Carmel at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Champaign Centennial 39, Antioch 27: At Effingham, the Sequoits dropped their opening game in the Christmas Classic.

Antioch (3-4) trailed 14-12 after one quarter, 23-16 at halftime and 28-24 after three.

Zion-Benton 82, Dunbar 67: At Proviso West, Amar Augillard scored 33 points to lead the Zee-Bees to the tournament-opening win.

Floyd Bailey and Kaleb Naylor had 23 and 18 points, respectively, for Zion-Benton.
