Defending champ Maine West pulls away from Hampshire

Hampshire had the unenviable task of taking on defending Class 4A state champion Maine West in its first round game at the Komaromy Classic Tournament Thursday in Carpentersville.

The Warriors, who have won this tournament the last three years, dismantled the Whip-Purs, 64-33.

Maine West will play Barrington in a Friday quarterfinal round. The Fillies edged Trinity, 47-45.

Hampshire and Trinity will battle in a consolation bracket game.

“Maine West deserved to win but we didn't give them much of a game,” Hampshire coach Eric Samuelson said.

Angela Dugalic and Dylan VanFleet, two returning starters, provided most of Maine West's firepower. Dugalic, committed to Oregon, poured in 30 points while VanFleet chipped in 15.

“She (Dugalic) is a good player, you just can't go one-on-one with her,” said Samuelson. “Number 22 (Veronica Walker) really contained her, but she is a D-I player so the game plan was to help and when we did that in the first half, we had some good luck but then we abandoned that in the second half.”

The Warriors held Hampshire's 6-1 Kelby Bannerman to 14 points.

“We knew we needed to keep the ball out of her (Bannerman) hands because she is a very good player inside and out,” said Maine West coach Kim deMarigny. “We did not do a very good job of that in the first half. We made some adjustments at halftime and tried to keep it out of her hands a little bit better in the second half.”

The Whip-Purs scored the first points of the game on a Jacey Lambert (6 points) bucket. Maine West immediately tied it on Dugalic's first basket of the contest.

Lambert's putback gave Hampshire a 7-6 lead. Dugalic sank two free throws to put Maine West back ahead, 8-7. The Warriors led 13-10 after the first quarter.

“The first game back from Christmas break we usually start a little slower, we are not as sharp, we seem to not remember our offensive and defensive coverage,” deMarigny said. “We can't take anything away from Hampshire, they are a very good team, well coached, but our girls really tried to execute some things and they got better as the game went on. I wasn't complaining as much as the game went on.”

A Bannerman trey halfway through the second quarter pulled Hampshire (8-6) within 21-17. But that was as close as the Whip-Purs got. Maine West (12-1) finished the half with an 11-2 run for a 33-19 lead at intermission.

The Warriors led 48-29 at the end of the third quarter.

“We wanted to try and pass the ball and play defense,” said Samuelson. “Ronnie (Veronica Walker) played good defense and other than that, we didn't pass the ball well and we didn't play good defense.”
