Carmel starts Dixon tourney with 2 wins

Jordan Wood scored 21 points, and Carmel Catholic's girls basketball team defeated Sandwich 50-42 to complete a 2-0 performance on the first day of the Dixon KSB Holiday Classic on Thursday.

Katie Lach and Kaytlyn Matz added 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the Corsairs, who opened the tourney by beating Springfield Southeast 60-41 at Reagan Middle School. Grace Sullivan scored 20 points, and Lach had 13.

Carmel (10-2) plays United Township of Moline in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Friday.

Grayslake Central 74, Resurrection 50: At St. Viator, Kate Bullman scored 22 points, and the Rams made a successful debut in the 37th annual Blenner Holiday Classic.

MK Drevline added a season-high 18 points for Grayslake Central (10-3), which also received 15 points apiece from Lauryn Cartee and Amanda Kocialkowski.

Grayslake Central plays Highland Park at 4 p.m. Friday.

Mundelein 41, Niles West 31: At Libertyville, Morgan Frank had 21 points (four 3-pointers), 4 steals, 4 blocks and 3 rebounds, and the Mustangs captured the seventh-place game.

Mundelein (2-12, 1-3 tourney) also received contributions from Brenda Mondragon (8 points), Gracie Werner (6 rebounds), Tess McKay (5 rebounds, 2 steals) and Allison Binz (3 points, 4 rebounds).

Vernon Hills 67, Streamwood 36: At Libertyville, freshman Alexa Cieslinski scored 13 points to lead three players in double figures, and the Cougars won the fifth-place game.

Daniella Jarrell and freshman Grace Koepke added 12 and 10 points, respectively, for Vernon Hills (8-7, 2-2 tourney). Grace Guillaume had 8 points.

"This was a very good tournament for us," Cougars coach Paul Brettner said. "We had many contributions from many players, and I'm looking forward to what 2020 brings for this team."

Warren 61, North Chicago 32: At Grant, the Blue Devils jumped out to a 38-15 lead at halftime and cruised to the victory.

Freshman guard Zion Levy popped in 17 points to lead Warren (5-9, 2-1 tourney), while Trenise Powe added 8 and Grace Lynch and Julia Retter had 7 apiece.

Warren plays host Grant at 1 p.m. Friday.

Bolingbrook 56, Lake Zurich 39: At Montini, Alayna Soukup scored 15 points for the Bears, who lost their opening game in the tournament.

Ella Gilbertson added 12 points for Lake Zurich (7-4), which plays Batavia at 11:30 a.m. Friday.
