Willowbrook aces on-court exam

It's exam week at Willowbrook, and in between studying, the girls basketball team passed its first on-court test of the week Tuesday.

The Warriors used runs of 22-0 and 24-0 to open the respective first and second halves to cruise to a 69-10 West Suburban Gold victory over Hinsdale South, which was missing three starters.

But there are two more tests to go before the holidays start - on the road Friday night at Morton and Saturday afternoon at Elk Grove.

How tough will this week be, both on and off the court?

"I have one more final left after this, so I have tomorrow off, so I can take a little break," said senior K'aliyha Herron, who led the Warriors with 17 points and added 5 rebounds.

"Just after games and practices, I'm studying hard all the time," added junior Stephanie Dasbach, who chipped in 15 points and 4 boards. "I have four more, and I took three today."

School comes first, according to Willowbrook coach Terry Harrell, but he's pleased with the work-life balance his crew has shown so far this week.

"We've got a big week, so first of all I cut practice, and so our practices are an hour and 15 minutes," Harrell said. "Exams finish at about 1 p.m., and so we'll be on the court at 2 p.m., which gives them a chance to study here, and then we'll go until 3:15, so they can go home and study what would be a normal night at home."

After scoring 22 out of the gate, Willowbrook (7-4, 4-1) slumped a bit in the second quarter, scoring only 7. But the Warriors reversed that completely coming out of halftime.

In that 24-0 third-quarter spurt, 8 points were scored via 4 steals, while junior guard Annemarie Knudtson canned a 3-pointer from the top left with 3:27 left.

The best the Hornets could manage was 5 points in both the second and fourth quarters. Senior guard Janae Washington led Hinsdale South with 5 points.

"We didn't expect Hinsdale South to not have three of their starters," Herron said. "So we were downstairs trying to plan out how to play with their starters. We have to play the game we know how to play."

Added Dasbach: "I didn't think we were going to come out by that much, but they had some injured players. We just played good as a team all around."

Willowbrook scored 41 points off turnovers and 34 in the paint. Of the 10 players that entered the game for the Warriors, nine scored. Junior forward Lindsey King hit on three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, accounting for all 9 of her points.
