Cohn, York add to their totals

As Erik Cohn soared past the 1,000-point mark, York soared past Prosser.

Cohn sank half his team's 12 3-pointers and reached a milestone to help the Dukes roll to Tuesday's 66-38 boys basketball victory over the Falcons in the Class 4A York regional semifinals in Elmhurst.

Cohn started the perimeter barrage a minute into the game, and Sam Nemanich came off the bench to end it with the Dukes' final 3-pointer in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter.

Third-seeded York (28-4), extending the program record for wins in a season. advances to Friday's regional final to face Wednesday's winner between No. 6 Oak Park-River Forest (17-9) and No. 11 Leyden (16-12). The Dukes lost both West Suburban Silver matchups to the Huskies, including their lone home loss of the season on Feb. 9.

"We've been anticipating the playoffs for a while, and we've been prepared," said Cohn, who scored 14 of his points in the second quarter. "There's no one on the team that can't shoot the 3 ball. We're always unselfish, always making the extra pass. We're getting open looks and knocking them down."

York trailed just once at 4-3 and quickly erased the deficit behind a seemingly endless supply of perimeter shooters. Six players hit 3-pointers for the Dukes, although Cohn was the clear leader while making four in the second quarter alone.

The Dukes' ball-press defense stymied No. 14 Prosser (10-18) - they held the Falcons to three single-digit quarters and forced 19 turnovers. Prosser struggled to trade 2 points for York's 3 and fell behind 36-17 by halftime.

While the Dukes shot 12 of 31 from beyond the arc, Prosser shot 1 of 8.

"We wanted to come out strong and send a message," said Dukes senior John Milling. "We wanted to use our defense, trap them, get loose balls and then finish at the other end."

York showed its typical balance after Cohn's 23 points. Nate Shockey scored 8 points, with Nick Kosich and Milling adding 7 points. Norvell Meadows paced Prosser with 10 points.

"It's great to be shooting the ball well right now," said York coach Vince Doran. "We're a veteran group and the kids have been doing that all year. They're playing with a lot of confidence."
