Wheeling, Elk Grove win regional openers

Michael Best had 25 points and Jeremy Kim added 16 Monday night as Wheeling opened play in its own Class 4A boys basketball regional with a 66-57 upset win over 13th-seeded Zion-Benton.

Brandon Zettek added 12 points and Christian McLaughlin had 8 off the bench for the 20th-seeded Wildcats (12-19), who take on No. 4 seed Mundelein at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Elk Grove 49, Taft 43: Ryne Singsank scored 21 points and Rylee Rathman added 19 to lead the 17th-seeded Grens past 16th seed Taft at the Class 4A Evanston regional. Elk Grove (6-25), which snapped an 11-game losing streak, will play top-seeded Evanston at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Hoffman Estates 42, Mather 27: The 14th-seeded Hawks (7-19) downed No. 19 Mather at the Class 4A Rolling Meadows regional. Hoffman will face No. 3 Maine South at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
