Notre Dame edges Carmel

Carmel Catholic standout Kimahri Wilson actually knows the kid. Like Wilson, Notre Dame's Anthony Sayles is a sophomore.

First one to 30 wins. Sayles had the better start on Wednesday night. He had 19 points at halftime. Wilson settled for 10.

Wilson started the third quarter with 7 points in a row for the Corsairs. He doubled his first half scoring in the third quarter alone.

Sayles had 32 points. Wilson had 28 points. Notre Dame (18-11,6-3) edged the Corsairs, 71-69, in an East Suburban Catholic Conference boys basketball game in Mundelein.

"We are the same age,'' Wilson said of he and Sayles. "We are both ranked as two of the best sophomores. But we missed two rebounds. If we get those two rebounds, it's a different game."

Wilson had half of his team's points after one quarter. His second 3-pointer of the game tied the contest at 14-14. However, the Dons held a 21-16 lead at quarter's end.

Carmel coach, Zack Ryan, complimented the Dons' sophomore.

"He's very good,'' Ryan said. "He's a really good player. I think we made him work harder in the second half. But Notre Dame hit some big shots at the end of the game."

Wilson at 5-foot-11, still managed to grab 6 rebounds on the night. Again it was anyone's game heading to the fourth quarter. Notre Dame was up 52-49.

On a jumper from Troy D'Amico, Notre Dame looked in good shape up 58-49. Damone Williams-Gray (17 points) answered back for Carmel (20-11. 6-3) with a 3-pointer and Carmel was in striking distance.

"We missed some rebounds tonight,'' Ryan noted. "But Kimahri hit some big shots for us."

Wilson hit five 3-pointers and the last two brought his team within 3 points.

Carmel's Johnny Roeser (11 points) hit the last 3-pointer of the night for the final score.
