Barrington rolls over Elk Grove

With just a little over three minutes played Tuesday night at Elk Grove, all five Barrington starters had scored.

And when the buzzer signaled the end of the first quarter, the stat sheet of Broncos 6-foot-5 senior guard Mark Johnson stood at 8 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.

That's the kind of productive night it was for visiting Barrington, as it opened up a 26-5 lead in the initial period and didn't look back in a 72-39 Mid-Suburban League boys basketball crossover victory.

Senior Jason Boock led the way for the Broncos with a game-high 15 points, and his team excelled at the foul line by going 13-of -14.

"We were able to get up and down a little bit and get some stuff inside," said Barrington coach Bryan Tucker. "It was tough for (Elk Grove) because they were missing some people tonight, and they had to adjust."

Ryley Rathman scored 14 points for the Grenadiers.

"We had four big guys on our team that were all out," said Elk Grove coach Nick Oraham, "but that's not an excuse for a lack of effort and a lack of execution on offense."

Mark Matos of the Grens hit a 3-pointer to start the second quarter, and a jumper by Rathman with 5:20 remaining in the stanza saw Elk Grove cut the lead to 31-16. Then Barrington went on a run and when Will Raider and Boock each sank 2 free throws right before intermission, the Broncos held a 45-20 advantage.

"Our guys were doing a really good job of sharing the ball," added Tucker. "I think that's one of the strengths of this team."

The Broncos (18-9) kept the pressure on in the third quarter and when Braden Albertson hit 2 free throws then a bucket late, Barrington had built up a 65-32 lead.

That resulted in a running clock the entire fourth period. Charlie Loomis came of the bench for Barrington to hit a 3, Joe Kalish had a 3 for Elk Grove, while Trevor Spragg of the Grens was 4-of-6 from the line in the final quarter.

Johnson finished with 8 points and 7 boards for Barrington, Connor Keenan scored 10 points and had 6 rebounds, while teammate Aaron Sarkar scored 8. Brandon Burns had 8 points for Elk Grove, Matos finished with 6 points while Rathman added 6 rebounds.

"You've got to credit Barrington," said Oraham. "They played hard from the get-go. They played hard throughout the whole game, even the guys who got in at the end. That's a well-run program that Bryan's got and it starts at the top with seniors like Boock and Johnson."

Rathman was one of a group of Grens seniors to play their final home game.

"It's a happy/sad moment," said Rathman. "It's nice to move on and head off to college but I'm sad to see it go."

"Ryley's got a really good jump shot off the dribble," said Oraham. "He's active defensively and he's been one of our more consistent players this season."
