Maine West breezes in the city

The state's top-ranked Class 4A girls basketball team played in the Windy City on Wednesday night.

Appropriately enough, Maine West breezed through its first game of the state tournament in Chicago.

With junior Angela Dugalic scoring a game-high 18 points with 8 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists, No. 1 seed Maine West rolled to a 76-31 triumph over No. 8 Lane Tech in the Indians' own regional.

Maine West (29-0), which has won 73 of its last 76 games and 30 straight, will face No. 9 Oak Park-River Forest (11-20) in Friday's 7 p.m. championship.

Senior Rachel Kent added 15 points and 3 rebounds for West while Vanessa Reyes chipped in 9 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Lena Albo had 7 points, 3 assists and 2 steals.

Barrington 52, Larkin 48: No. 3 Barrington (12-17) topped No. 8 Larkin (11-18) in the semifinal of the Class 4A Elgin regional.

The Fillies will face No. 2 South Elgin (18-11) in Thursday's 7 p.m. championship.

Barrington junior Shanna Turczynski (6 assists, 4 steals) scored all 13 of her team-high points in the second half while classmate Taylor Thompson added 12.

Freshman Sydney Granby scored 9 points and sophomore Michaela Goetze 8 for the winners.

Junior Anna Mae King led Barrington with 9 rebounds while Thompson had 7 and Granby 6.

"I thought we came out a little tight," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "We got into foul trouble and that changed the game for us. I thought Shanna had a real nice game. She made things happen for us at the right times. And Shanna and Michaela hit some big free throws down the stretch."

Wheaton North 39, Schaumburg 26: No. 5 Wheaton North won the Class 4A Bartlett semifinal game over the No. 11 Saxons, who finished their season at 12-15.

Senior center Vicky Aguirre led Schaumburg with 8 points while freshman teammate Alyssa Orozco added 6.
