Geneva's Mascari earns MVP accolade

Geneva's Mitch Mascari is this week's Daily Herald boys basketball MVP.

Mitch Mascari, Geneva: This 42-percent shooter from 3-point range stayed hot and helped Geneva improve to 23-1. The 6-foot-5 guard led the Vikings with 20 points and made 3 steals and 3 assists in a 54-42 home victory over St. Charles North. Three nights later the senior scored 11 of his game-high 21 points in the second-quarter of a 75-55 home win against St. Charles East, highlighted by a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer that beat the halftime buzzer. Against Aurora Christian the following night, Mascari sank three straight 3-point attempts in the second quarter of a 68-31 blowout and finished with 11 points and 6 rebounds.

Chris Hodges, Schaumburg: The Saxons' 6-foot-8 sophomore had 22 points and 7 rebounds in helping his team defeat Barrington 58-53. The victory, Schaumburg's 17th of the season, kept the Saxons tied with Fremd atop the Mid-Suburban League West Division.

Everett Stubblefield III, Willowbrook: Stubblefield helped the Warriors stretch a winning streak to four straight with WSC Gold victories over Morton and Leyden. The 5-foot-10 junior guard scored 25 points in a 74-64 win over Morton and had 14 points in a 75-62 win over Leyden. He averaged 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists.

Austin Martineau, Grayslake North: A three-year starting varsity quarterback and two-year varsity basketball player, the senior made the most of his last opportunity playing against the crosstown rival. He scored a career- and team-high 21 points, sinking three 3-pointers, as the Knights defeated host Grayslake Central 73-66.
