Grayslake Central clinches NLCC title outright

Kate Bullman scored 8 of her game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter, as Grayslake Central's girls basketball team clinched the Northern Lake County Conference championship outright with a 43-42 win over host Lakes on Monday night.

Grayslake Central (29-7, 12-0) trailed 14-11 after one quarter, 24-21 at halftime and 34-33 after three. Rosie Drevline added 7 points for the Rams. Bullman sank three 3-pointers.

Grayslake Central tied for the conference championship each of the last two seasons.

Mia Edwards had 16 points and 7 rebounds for Lakes (11-16, 4-8). Kylie Jozwik scored 11 points, and Sara Smith had 8 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.

"Good battle tonight," Eagles coach Brian Phelan said "We played well on both ends of the floor. Very proud of our effort."

Libertyville 61, Carmel 30: The visiting Wildcats notched their 20th win of the season, as Lydia Crow scored 16 points, including four 3-pointers, in the nonconference game.

Margaret Buchert added 11 points for Libertyville (20-7). Lauren Huber and Abigail Frea each had 8 points and 7 rebounds.

Carmel (11-17) received 9 points from Caitlin Teehan and eight from Brigit Barr.

Grant 45, Crystal Lake South 43: Jazzlyn Linbo's 21 points led the visiting Bulldogs to the nonconference win.

Brooke Karpinske scored 5 of her 11 points in the fourth quarter for Grant (15-11), which led 37-32 after three.

Wauconda 52, Grayslake North 37: Sophomore center Kiley Szmajda scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, and the visiting Bulldogs rallied in the second half to snap a two-game losing streak in Northern Lake County Conference play.

Wauconda (19-5, 8-4) also received contributions from Allie Tylka (11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals), Ella Karg (8 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 steals) and Jessie Pakaski (8 points, 13 rebounds). Down 17-13 at halftime, the Bulldogs opened the third quarter with a 13-0 run. They outscored the Knights 23-8 in the third and 16-12 in the fourth.

"We struggled through the first half to do the things that have made us successful all season," Wauconda coach Jaime Dennis said. "We finally started to move the ball, and players started to step up and be a threat."

Grayslake North (9-19, 5-7) was led by Savannah Guenther's 11 points. Margaret Stanfel had eight and sophomore Meghan Leahy added seven.
