Tumilty's 32 leads Willowbrook over Batavia

Slack?

Scotty Tumilty picked up the bulk of it in a 70-53 win over the home team at the 26th Annual Jim & Sylvia Roberts Night of Hoops at Batavia on Saturday.

With 1,000-point scorer Matas Masys still unavailable due to injury and leading scorer Everett Stubblefield out of the game following a second-quarter ankle injury, senior guard Scotty Tumilty took over.

The 5-foot-11 guard led the Warriors to their third win in six days by nailing six 3-pointers on his way to a career-high 32 points.

"I felt it was necessary," Tumilty said, "but I took the same approach as every other game even if Matys and Stubblefield are playing. I had it going and I kept it going. It helped us pull out the win, but other guys stepped up, too. It was an overall good team win."

Tied at 32 apiece, Tumilty helped Willowbrook (12-9) outscore Batavia (10-13) by 18 points in the third quarter. He sank 4 of 5 attempts from 3-point range, including one right before the buzzer that staked the Warriors to a 54-37 lead.

"When you have your leading scorer out in Stubblefield, obviously, there's more shots to go around," Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins said. "Guys knew they had to step up and be extra aggressive."

Junior guard Sam Tumilty scored 14 points and grabbed 5 rebounds and 6-5 senior Charlie Flak made a pair of 3-pointers in a 10-point, 10-rebound performance.

The win was particularly satisfying for the Tumilty brothers, whose Willowbrook football team's season ended in a quarterfinal at Batavia with a 34-27 overtime loss on Nov. 10.

"It was a different outcome this time," Sam Tumilty said. "We made sure we finished business."

Junior Jayden Johnson led Batavia with 21 points, 16 in the first half. The loss was second straight and fifth in 6 games for the Bulldogs, who return to DuKane Conference play on Tuesday with a home game against Glenbard North. The Bulldogs intend to address their missteps head on in the interim.

"You don't stop preaching what's right, where our mistakes are," Batavia coach Jim Nazos said. "You build on things that are good and show them things that you've got to improve, have a good practice on Monday and play well against Glenbard North. It's what you do. You can't ignore problems and hope they go away. You show them, you work through them. We've had a mature group all year long. They've been receptive to criticism."

Zack Weber and Ethan Neibch each scored 8 points for Batavia.
