Tonkery takes court, Grayslake Central wins again

Grayslake Central senior guard Abby Tonkery has waited all season to play in a basketball game.

She got her chance on Wednesday on Senior Night, and it was a happy night all around for the host Rams.

Grayslake Central defeated North Chicago 48-19 to improve to 17-7 and 9-0 in the Northern Lake County Conference with its fourth win in a row.

Tonkery, who was diagnosed with leukemia last spring, started and played a few minutes. She scored 2 points and grabbed 2 rebounds in her season debut.

Rosie Drevline paced Grayslake Central with 14 points, sinking three of her four 3-pointers in the first quarter to help the Rams build a 14-12 lead. Kate Bullman scored 10 of her 13 points in the second quarter, as the Rams outscored the Warhawks 13-0 to lead 27-12 at halftime.

Round Lake 64, Grayslake North 56: Diane Flade scored 21 points, and the visiting Panthers won in Northern Lake County Conference action for their eighth win in a row.

Freshman guard Taylor Major added a season-high 17 points for Round Lake (17-8, 7-3), and Emily Etherington had 9 points.

Grayslake North (8-16, 4-5) was led by Savannah Guenther's 25 points (three 3-pointers) and Margaret Stanfel's 17 (five 3s).

Wauconda 54, Lakes 42: Allie Tylka's 22 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals and 3 blocks led the way, as the host Bulldogs won in Northern Lake County Conference action.

Ella Karg added 10 points for Wauconda (18-3, 7-2), which ran its winning streak to nine games. The Bulldogs' other contributors included Jessie Pakaski (8 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists), Kiley Szmajda (7 points) and Mackenzie Arden (7 points, 7 rebounds).

"We have had two close games with Lakes this season and expected another battle tonight," Wauconda coach Jaime Dennis said. "We had a tough time with their speed and aggressiveness in the first half, gave up too many layups. We switched up our defense at half and were able to shut them down in the third."

Lakes (9-14, 3-6) was led by Sara Smith's 10 points and Rosie Tekampe's 7 points.

"We had a good start to the game," Eagles coach Brian Phelan said. "I thought we did a good job vs. their press. We ended the second quarter well heading into halftime. They checked zone in the third, we started with a number of empty possession and they extended their lead. Tylka is a tough cover. We need to make shots and get defensive rebounds moving forward."

Lake Forest 61, Mundelein 36: Halle Douglass had 16 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks, and the host Scouts won in North Suburban Conference action.

Lake Forest (19-6, 7-3) also received 11 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals from Grace Tirzmalis. Molly Fisher (5 assists) and Finola Summerville added 9 and 7 points, respectively.

Mundelein fell to 7-18 and 2-9.
