Cary-Grove pushes Dundee-Crown in 2nd meeting

Easily defeating Cary-Grove 50-28 Dec. 7, Dundee-Crown coach Sarah Miller realized the second Fox Valley Conference game against the Trojans Wednesday night in Carpentersville would be much closer.

Miller was right.

Staving off a valiant Trojan late game rally, D-C held on for a 47-42 victory and improved to 18-7 overall and 8-1 in FVC play.

"We have so much respect for Cary-Grove as a program," said Miller. "We knew it would be a tougher game the second time around. Give Cary-Grove credit they played very well. We found a way to win."

The Chargers seemed in good shape after a 5-footer in the lane by Makayla Gotter gave the home team 42-30 lead with 2:59 left in the contest.

The Trojans (8-14, 6-5), winners of 6 of 9, refused to wilt.

Cary-Grove, with a 10-2 run, were able to slice the lead to 44-40 on a putback by Taylor Tomasiewic with 42 seconds remaining,

Making 3-of-4 from the free throw line in the last 22 seconds, Katelyn Skibinski salted away the win for the Chargers.

The Trojans were hindered by making only 14-of-24 from the line for 58 percent.

"Free throws really hurt us," said Cary-Grove coach Rod Saffert. "We played zone the first time we played them and they got a lot of easy shots. We played man-to-man the whole game and it was effective. The effort was great and we never quit. We were competitive tonight. We have been playing much better lately."

Skibinski paced the Chargers offensive attack with 13 points, 7 in the pivotal fourth quarter. She added 4 assists with 3 steals.

"We knew Cary-Grove would play us tougher this time around," said Skibinski. "We have to do a better job of coming ready to play. My teammates did a good job of getting me the ball. It was a good game to win."

Payton Schmidt, with a pair of treys, added 12 while Gianine Boado equaled Schmidt with 12.

"I like our balance tonight," said Miller. "We have a lot of kids who can score. We have to do a better job of chinning up and rebounding better."

Tomasiewicz led the Trojans with 14 points. Jannusch added 13 with 10 rebounds and freshman Emily Lukowski scored 10 with 7 rebounds and 3 assists.

Saffert is high on the future of Lukowski.

"I saw her play in fifth grade and knew she would be a player," said Saffert. "She plays with a lot of poise for a freshman and is getting better every game."
