Geneva's McDonald garners MVP honor

Geneva's Jack McDonald is this week's Daily Herald boys basketball MVP.

Jack McDonald, Geneva: This 5-foot-11 senior point guard led tournament champion Geneva (13-0) to consecutive victories over host Wheeling, defending champion Niles North, once-beaten St. Viator and 11-win Fremd at the 41st Annual Wildcat Hardwood Classic. McDonald, the catalyst, was named tournament MVP after he averaged 16.3 points and 5 assists per game. His steal and assist with one minute remaining propelled the Vikings to a 45-41 title-game victory over Fremd. He paced all scorers with 18 points.

Sam Walsh, York: The 6-foot-5 senior forward led the Dukes to their fifth championship in the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic with victories over Andrew, Stagg, St. Ignatius, St. Laurence and Downers Grove South in a span of six days. Walsh averaged 12.6 points and 6 rebounds as the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

Scottie Ebube, Mundelein: The 6-foot-8 sophomore keeps growing. Earning tournament-MVP honors at Carbondale, where the Mustangs went 4-0 over the holidays, has only added to his breakout season. He had a season-high 27 points and 15 rebounds in the Mustangs' title-clinching, 65-43 win over Collins Academy. For the tournament, he averaged 19 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.

Julian Campbell, Palatine: The Pirates' 6-foot-6 senior scored 83 points and had 25 rebounds in four games at York's Jack Tosh Holiday Classic, including 32 points in a 62-49 win over Highland Park and 25 in a loss to Metea Valley. Palatine went 2-2 at the ultra-competitive tournament.
