MVP Ebube leads Mundelein to Carbondale title
Scottie Ebube scored a season-high 27 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, and Mundelein's boys basketball team won the championship of the 55th annual Carbondale Holiday Tournament by beating Collins Academy 65-43 at Southern Illinois University on Saturday night.
Ebube was named tournament MVP.
Andrew Gonzalez also had a season-high point total, tossing in 21, as the Mustangs completed a 4-0 run in the tourney to improve to 10-5 on the season.
Conor Enright contributed 10 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists.
Mundelein started the day by beating Marion 54-32 behind Jack Bikus' career-high 24 points, which included six 3-pointers, and 8 rebounds. Ebube added 13 points and 9 boards.
Enright and Bikus were also named to the all-tournament team.
Wauconda 68, Harvest Christian 53: At Marengo, Donovan Carter scored 26 points (two 3-pointers), and the Bulldogs won the fifth-place gam of the E.C. Nichols tournament.
Nick Bulgarelli added 16 points (four 3-pointer) for Wauconda (6-7), which finished 3-1 in the tournament.
Round Lake 51, Woodstock 50: At Marengo, Kevonne Peterson scored 18 points, and the Panthers finished up the E.C. Nichols tournament with their second win in a row.
Hakim Williams added 14 points for Round Lake (7-8, 2-2 tourney).
Vernon Hills 51, Von Steuben 35: At Maine East, Jack Barszcz scored 23 points, as the Cougars finished up the tournament with their second win in a row.
Joey Levitan sank 6 of 7 free throws down the stretch for Vernon Hills (4-13, 2-2 tourney).
Grayslake Central 35, Wheeling 33: At Wheeling, Antonio Crews hit a 3-pointer with 1:02 left in the fourth quarter to give the Rams a 34-33 lead, and they hung on for the win in their finale of the 41st annual Hardwood Classic.
Crews finished with a team-high 10 points, as Grayslake Central (7-7) finished 1-3 in the tournament.
Johnsburg 58, Grant 51: At Jacobs, the Bulldogs dropped their finale in the Hinkle Holiday Classic.
Hunter Waszkowski and Torren Curry each scored 11 points for Grant (8-8, 2-3 tournament).
Oak Lawn 59, Antioch 43: At Effingham, the Sequoits lost the consolation championship game.
Antioch (9-5) finished 2-2 in The Christmas Classic co-hosted by Effingham and Teutopolis.
Centennial (Tenn.) 56, Carmel 49: At Centralia, the Corsairs led the fifth-place game 15-7 after one quarter and 29-18 at halftime but got outscored 22-6 in the third and 16-14 in the fourth.
Johnny Roeser had 13 points and 6 rebounds for Carmel (11-6, 2-2 tournament), which was playing its second game of the day. Bryce Moore had 9 points in the loss.
Carmel 56, Centralia 54: At Centralia, Johnny Roeser had a game-high 23 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals, as the Corsairs won their morning game to advance to the fifth-place game later in the day.
Damone Williams-Gray added 15 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals for Carmel (11-5, 2-1 tourney). Kimahri Wilson contributed 8 points, 3 assists and 2 steals.
Lanphier 63, Lake Zurich 42: At Pekin, J.R. Cison poured in 25 points for the Bears in their tournament finale.
Will Tucker had 7 points for Lake Zurich (3-12, 1-3 tourney), which dropped its final three games.
Cison was named to the all-tournament team.
Morton 60, Lake Zurich 45: Late Friday night, at Pekin, the Bears suffered their second loss of the day.
J.R. Cison and Will Tucker scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, for Lake Zurich (3-12, 1-2 tourney).
