Schaumburg falls in OT

St. Ignatius' zone defense and guard Christian Davis were just a little bit too much for the Schaumburg boys basketball team Thursday night at York High School.

The Saxons fell 51-47 in overtime to the Wolfpack in the second round of the Jack Tosh 45th Annual Holiday Classic.

"We dug ourselves a hole early in the game," said Schaumburg's Mike Hodges, who scored a team-high 21 points. "The turnovers we had at the end of the game hurt us also. It was costly mistakes that shot us in the foot."

Schaumburg (10-4) fell behind 15-5 with 1:54 left in the first quarter.

"They go up by 10 points early and then we have to work to get back in the game," said Schaumburg coach Wade Heisler. "We knew that St. Ignatius was good. They competed hard and were physical with us. That No 3. (Davis) really made it tough on us."

Davis scored 23 points on 10 of 18 from 2-point range, grabbed 6 rebounds and had 4 steals.

"I had success with my jump shots because when I drove to the basket the defender would back up and I just shot the ball," said Davis. "We knew we had to limit the Hodges' and keep them off the boards."

"We knew Schaumburg has a balanced attack," said St. Ignatius coach Matt Monroe. "We wanted to cut off the lane and double-team Chris Hodges. We couldn't let him score 38 points like he did the night before. Davis made big plays for us down the stretch and came up big in the clutch for his team."

Mike Hodges kept the Saxons in the game with some stellar play for the first three quarters as Schaumburg trailed 37-35 after his two back-to-back baskets to close out the third quarter. Arnav Karnik tied the game at 45 with 1:10 left in regulation.

Neither team could score the rest of the quarter. The Saxons had a chance to win the game but Heze Trotter's (8 points, 6 rebounds) baseline shot fell short at the buzzer.

A Mike Hodges-to-Chris Hodges (9 points, 9 rebounds) basket to start the overtime was the last basket Schaumburg would score. Davis tied the score at 47 and put his team ahead with a free throw with 42 seconds left. A.J Redd stole the ball with 22 seconds left for the Wolfpack (9-5) and secured by Davis which led to two free throws by Luke Collins to finish the scoring.

The Saxons did not fare well from he arc hitting on 7 of 22 shots. Schaumburg ended up hitting 19 of 46 attempts but committed 12 turnovers to St. Ignatius' five.

"We have a game tomorrow and we have a chance to bounce back and get a win," said Mike Hodges.
