Van Fleet, Maine West roll to 15th straight

In its bid for a third straight title at the Komaromy Classic at Dundee-Crown, Maine West's girls basketball team got under way with a 74-44 triumph over Barrington on Wednesday.

It was the 15th straight win without a loss this season for the state's top-ranked Class 4A team.

The Warriors will face Trinity in Thursday's 5 p.m. quarterfinal of the 36th annual Christmas tourney.

West junior guard Dylan Van Fleet poured in a career-high 25 points, hitting 11 of 14 shots with 9 steals and 3 assists.

Senior Rachel Kent added 16 points (3-of-5 from 3-point land) with 6 assists while Angela Dugalic and Lena Albo each chipped in 10 points.

Barrington (4-10) was led by Taylor Thompson (15 points) Sydney Granby (8) and Anna Mae King (7). The Fillies face St. Charles North in Thursday's 9:30 a.m. consolation game.

St. Viator 58, Maine East 20: The host Lions (11-4) of the 36th annual Blenner Holiday Classic at St. Viator got off to a winning start in pool play. St. Viator (11-4) was led by Joy Bergstrom (13 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist) and Natalie Krause (11 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal). Elise Horbach, Nora Ahram and Keely McClennan each chipped in 8 points for the Lions, who face Glenbrook North at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Schaumburg 56, Hinsdale Central 31: The No. 8 seeded Saxons (9-6) connected for nine 3-pointers en route to their opening-round win at the Bill Neibch Holiday Classic at Wheaton North.

Senior Ariana Doroskin (15 points) and freshman Alyssa Orozco (13 points) each hit three 3-pointers while junior Talia Torosian (6 points) had two and classmate Mady Vodicka added one.

Schaumburg advanced to Thursday's quarterfinal of the 16-team tourney to face top-seeded Wheaton North at 7:30 p.m.

Maine South 47, Prospect 43: Senior Jessica Kowalczyk (13 points, 4 rebounds) and sophomore Eliot Dujotrek (10 points, 5 rebounds) reached double figures for the Knights (7-5) in their first-round game of the Komaromy Classic.

Helen Siavelis, Ashley Adams also had 4 rebounds for Prospect, which faces Resurrection in the consolation bracket at 11 a.m. on Thursday.

Cary-Grove 50, Conant 36: Senior guard Stephanie Mazurek scored 15 points, including 5-of-5 at the free throw line, to lead Conant in its final pool play game of the Libertyville tournament. Hannah Shulman added 7 points and Abbey DiSalvo 6 for the Cougars (5-10, 1-2), which face Streamwood (4-12) in the seventh-place game at 9 a.m. on Thursday.

Zion-Benton 71, Leyden 37: Zion-Benton improved to 12-2 with the win over the Eagles (5-4) in the first round of pool play at St. Viator's Blenner Classic. Leyden meets Wheeling at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Plainfield North 36, Wheeling 27: The Wildcats (6-8) fell in their opener at the Blenner Classic at St. Viator and will meet Leyden on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Downers Grove North 55, Palatine 21: The Pirates (1-11) fell to the No. 3 seeded in their opener at the Wheaton North tourney and will face Jacobs at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday in consolation play.

Wheaton North 71, Elk Grove 48: Top-seeded Wheaton North won its first game in its own Bill Neibch Holiday Classic over the Grenadiers (3-9), who will face Hinsdale Central at 1:30 p.m. today in the consolation bracket.
