Libertyville advances to title game of own tourney

Lydia Crow scored 22 points, Lauren Huber hit 5 of 5 free throws in the fourth quarter, and Libertyville's girls basketball team advanced to the final of its own Winter tournament by beating Niles West 66-53 on Wednesday.

Crow sank four of her six 3-pointers in the second quarter in helping the Wildcats build a 36-34 lead by halftime. She then hit 2 of 2 free throws in the final quarter, in which Libertyville outscored Niles West 16-7 to secure a spot in Thursday's 2:30 p.m. title game against Rolling Meadows.

Huber scored 7 of her 8 points in the fourth quarter and led the Wildcats (12-4, 2-1 tourney) with 11 rebounds. Margaret Buchert and Abigail Frea added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

"We had great production from our players," Libertyville coach Greg Pedersen said.

Antioch 46, Timothy Christian 44: At Lisle, the Sequoits opened the Cage Classic by breaking a six-game losing streak with what coach Tim Borries called a "true team win."

In the waning minutes of the game, Antioch overcame a seven-point deficit and went on a 9-2 run behind Piper Foote's team-high 13 points (4 rebounds, 3 steals). Freshman Avery Larson (12 points) came up big in the fourth quarter as well, pulling in 3 of her 8 rebounds in the last minute of play to secure the win.

Nayla Loos put in 7 points and dished out 5 assists, and Noor Abdellatif led the Sequoits in the paint with a season-high 10 rebounds (6 points, 3 steals).

Antioch (2-12) plays Rosary at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Stevenson 51, Hampshire 40: At Dundee-Crown, the Patriots opened the Charger Classic with a victory, as Avery King had 16 points (two 3-pointers) and 6 rebounds.

Nikki Ware added 10 points (two 3s) for Stevenson (10-5). Freshman Simone Sawyer had 7 points and 3 assists, and fellow freshman Ava Bardic scored a season-high 8 points.

Quincy Senior 53, Warren 42: At Warren, Sarah Nelson had 12 points and 7 rebounds for Quincy Senior (13-2, 2-0 tournament).

Warren (3-12, 0-2 tourney) was led by Trenise Powe with 10 points. Breleigh Gula had 9 points for the Blue Devils, who lost their sixth game in a row.

Warren plays Grayslake Central at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

Lake Forest 57, Deerfield 29: At Warren, the Scouts improved to 12-4 and 2-0 in the Blue Devil Classic.

Halle Douglass led the way for Lake Forest with 15 points, 11 assists and 7 rebounds. Grace Tirzmalis added 16 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists, and Ellie Pearson contributed 11 points and 5 rebounds.

Evanston 62, Lake Zurich 55: At Montini, the Bears lost their tournament opener, despite Ella Gilbertson's 20 points.

Lake Zurich (7-9), which has lost three in a row and five of its last six, resumes the tournament at 1:15 p.m. Thursday against either Nazareth Academy or Lyons Township.
