Tylka leads Wauconda to win in NIHC finale

Allie Tylka had 22 points, 12 rebounds, 7 assists and 7 steals, as Wauconda's girls basketball team finished the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic by beating Johnsburg 62-51 in the second-place pool at Richmond-Burton on Saturday.

Mackenzie Arden added 13 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks for the Bulldogs (12-3, 4-1 tournament). Morgan Lung (season-high 12 points) and Kiley Szmajda (11) also scored in double figures, and Ella Karg dished out 7 assists.

"We played some great defense in the first half," said Wauconda coach Jaime Dennis, whose team led 28-15 at the break. "The best half of defense we have played all season. We did a nice job of passing the ball and having patience in our offense."

The Bulldogs had 23 assists.

"It was a good win and a nice way to go into the holiday break," Dennis said.

Lakes 39, McHenry 37: At Richmond-Burton, the Eagles pulled out their finale in the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic, receiving 9 points from Kylie Jozwik and eight from Sara Smith.

Taylor Lehman had 7 points for Lakes (7-10, 3-2 tournament), which led 16-12 after one quarter and 21-18 at halftime but went into the fourth tied at 28-28. The Eagles outscored the Warriors 11-9 in the final quarter.

"We started the game with good energy," Lakes coach Brian Phelan said. "We hit some shots early and built off that moving forward. Give McHenry credit. They battled back and took the lead in the fourth. But we stayed strong and came up with a timely steal in the last minute when the game was tied. We were connected on defense all night and played well on that end of the court. Good road win."

Crystal Lake Central 56, Round Lake 32: At McHenry's West Campus, the Tigers captured the third-place game in the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic.

Round Lake (9-8) lost its last two games and finished 3-2 in the tournament.

Lake Forest 61, Warren 33: At Warren, up 27-20 at halftime, the Scouts opened the third with a 10-0 run and outscored the

Blue Devils 26-8 in the quarter en route to the Blue Devil Classic win.

Halle Douglass had 18 points and 6 rebounds, and Grace Tirzmalis added 17 points for Lake Forest (11-4, 1-0 tournament). Tirzmalis scored 9 points in the third, which also featured 3-pointers from Douglass, Ellie Pearson and Molly Fisher for the Scouts.

Warren (3-11, 0-1) scored all but two of its points in the first half from beyond the arc. Macy Kocen and Caroline Sharpe each sank two of the Blue Devils' six 3-pointers. Kocen and Sharpe led Warren with 8 points apiece.

Quincy Senior 40, Carmel 30: At Warren, Kiley Espinoza scored all of her game-high 10 points, including two 3-pointers, in the first half to lead the Blue Devils and former Mundelein coach Martin Pazanin to victory in an opening-round game of the Blue Devil Classic.

Sarah Nelson had 9 points and 6 rebounds for Quincy (12-2), Stephanie Anders had 8 points, and Kaileigh Carothers chipped in 7 points and 14 rebounds.

Carmel (5-7), which lost its fifth game in a row, was led by Katie Lach's 8 points (two 3-pointers). Grace Sullivan scored 6 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.

Washington 54, Grayslake North 32: The host Knights had their four-game winning streak stopped in the nonconference game.

Savannah Guenther had 12 points for Grayslake North 4-9.

Libertyville 63, Cary-Gove 49: At Libertyville, the host Wildcats rebounded from their tournament-opening loss to Conant on Friday night by beating the Trojans behind Margaret Buchert's 19 points.

Buchert hit three of her four 3-pointers in the opening quarter in helping Libertyville (11-4, 1-1 tourney) build an 18-14 lead.

Lydia Crow added 12 points, including two 3-pointers. Abigail Frea also sank two 3s and finished with 10 points. Lauren Huber had 10 points and 7 rebounds, and Maddie Spaulding grabbed 8 rebounds.

"We made the extra pass today, so our offense clicked," Libertyville coach Greg Pedersen said.

Mundelein 49, Streamwood 21: At Libertyville, Morgan Frank had 22 points (two 3-pointers), 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks, and the Mustangs won on second-day action of the tournament to snap a four-game losing streak.

Kendall Klatt added 15 points and 5 rebounds for Mundelein (6-10, 1-1), which led 11-7 after one quarter, 22-13 at halftime and 38-18 after three.

Grant 58, Antioch 38: On Friday night, Jazzlyn Linbo had 26 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks, as the host Bulldogs won in Northern Lake County Conference action.

Brooke Karpinske scored 17 points, shooting 4 of 6 from the three-point range for Grant (8-6, 6-1). Ally Mahinay dished out 10 assists.

Antioch fell to 1-12 and 1-6 in the NLCC.
