Marian Central tops Round Lake

Janelle Allen scored 13 points, and Marian Central's girls basketball team defeated Round Lake 46-39 in the first-place bracket of the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic at McHenry's West Campus on Friday night.

Round Lake (9-7, 3-1 tournament) was led by Giselle Raygoza with 12 points and Diane Flade with 10.

Marian Central (7-6, 4-0) also got 9 points from Morgan Laudick.

The tournament concludes on Saturday.

Wauconda 50, Lakes 46: At Richmond-Burton, Allie Tylka had 16 points. 11 rebounds and 8 steals, as the Bulldogs rallied to win the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic game.

Wauconda (11-3, 3-1 tournament) outscored Lakes 16-11 in the fourth quarter. Kiley Szmajda added 12 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks for the Bulldogs. Jessie Pakaski had 9 points and 9 rebounds, and Ella Karg dished out 6 assists.

Lakes (6-10, 2-2 tournament) was led by Sara Smith with 12 points and Kylie Jozwik with 10.

"It was another close battle with Lakes," Wauconda coach Jaime Dennis said. "It was free throws that were the difference. After going 1 of 8 from the free-throw line in the third quarter, we hit a few more in the fourth (7 of 13). That is still not great, but it was enough. We hit them at the right time. All our shots seemed rushed tonight, but it was a good defensive effort. We are starting to put some things together and make some improvements on the defensive end of the ball."

The tournament finishes up on Saturday. Wauconda will play at 1:30 p.m. back at Richmond-Burton against either Johnsburg or McHenry.

Stevenson 49, Carmel 45: Simone Sawyer knocked down three 3-pointers and led all scorers with 21 points, as the visiting Patriots won the nonconference game.

Avery King added 10 points for Stevenson (9-5).

Carmel (5-6) received 14 points from Katie Lach and 12 from Caitlin Teehan. Lach made three 3-pointers, and Teehan hit a pair.

Vernon Hills 40, Streamwood 34: At Libertyville, Piper Bedell had 16 points and 5 rebounds, as the Cougars opened the tournament with a win.

Kayla Caudle had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Vernon Hills (9-4), and Daniella Jarrell also scored 10 points.

"We seemed to play an uneven game, not really finding our offensive rhythm," Cougars coach Paul Brettner said. "Credit Streamwood because they always play so hard. We looked our best when all five players on the floor were playing good defense, but we were not consistent in this area."

Rolling Meadows 49, Mundelein 29: At Libertyville, Rolling Meadows improved to 12-3, while handing Mundelein (5-10) its fourth loss in a row.
