Filippone, Antioch outlast Grant in 2 OTs

Antioch has raised its level of play this season and needed a double-overtime thriller for another outstanding finish.

Dan Filippone dropped in a season-high 34 points, including two free throws with 11 seconds left in the second overtime, and Ben Nauman's steal in the final seconds gave the Sequoits a 60-59 victory over visiting Grant in a Northern Lake County Conference game on Saturday night.

Antioch raised its record to 7-2 and 2-1 in the NLCC, while Grant dropped to 5-5 and 2-1.

The Bulldogs had taken a 59-58 lead on Henry Kusiak's short jump shot with 25 seconds left. But Filippone was fouled and delivered 2 free throws to give the lead back to the Sequoits. Filippone went 8 of 9 from the foul line in the game.

"I had no nerves. I've done this before," said Filippone, who had 18 points in the first half. "It's a blessing to play with these guys. It's crazy. I wouldn't want it any other way than to beat our rivals. This has been a rivalry since grade school. It was a great win for us."

Nauman's steal in the final seconds came just past half-court after he anticipated the inbounds pass.

"I try it a lot and it usually doesn't work out that well," Nauman said. "I saw the ball from long distance. I thought I could make (the steal) and I did. When I got it, I started to dribble it up the floor."

Nauman was fouled with 2.8 seconds left, but he missed both free throws.

Grant had one last chance without a timeout and tried a shot from beyond half-court that hit the front of the rim.

"I didn't expect a game like this one, but I believe that we were prepared for it," Antioch coach Jim White said. "We go pretty deep and we couldn't have gone deeper. ... The win is nice since we're not going to see this floor for another month. It's one we've had on the radar for too long."

The scored was tied at 36-36 at the end of the third, and it was 49-49 in the final seconds of the fourth. Antioch had a chance to win but missed a shot at the end of regulation. The score remained tied, at 53-53, at the end of the first OT.

Grant was led by Torren Curry with 21 points. Tavarus Williams added 18.
