Family affair goes to Schaumburg in OT
The first Mid-Suburban League girls basketball game featuring a sister-in-law and brother-in-law as opposing coaches (Schaumburg's Jacqui Strauch and Conant's Todd Strauch) went to the host Saxons 47-41 in overtime on Friday night.
Vicky Aguirre scored 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead Schaumburg (5-6, 1-2) while teammate Alyssa Orozco added 12 points.
Stephanie Mazurek paced Conant (4-7,1-2) with 12 points and 6 rebounds while Hannah Shulman added 10 points.
Wheeling 48, Buffalo Grove 43: Junior Morgan Collar and senior Nosa Igiehion each scored 12 points as the visiting Wildcats (6-7, 1-3) won their first MSL East game. Tommy Helms added 8 points for Wheeling. Kendra Lee had 12 points with Sydney Fortman and Macy Floro adding 8 each for BG (6-5, 1-2).
Barrington 42, Hoffman Estates 41: Freshman Laura Mahlum (8 points) hit a free throw with no time on the clock to lift visiting Barrington (3-8, 2-1) in the MSL West contest. Shanna Sturczynski and Anna Mae King each scored 9 points for the Fillies while teammate Taylor Thompson added 7. Raven Wilson (18 points), Ana Sturgis (10) and Ashley Oliver (10) led Hoffman (2-9, 0-3).
Fremd 57, Palatine 22: Visiting Fremd (12-0, 3-0) rolled in the MSL West as Ruthie Montella (13 points) and Emily Klaczek (8) led the way. Grace LaBarge, Ella Burns, Olivia Hill and Maddy McCarthy each chipped in 6 for the MSL West leaders. Madi Stark had 5 points for Palatine (1-9, 0-3).
Rolling Meadows 52, Elk Grove 46: Senior guard Alexa Davis scored a game-high 18 points for visiting Rolling Meadows (11-3, 2-1) which took a half-game lead over Hersey and Prospect in the MSL East. Susannah Holifield added 13 points for Meadows while Moira Hickey added 8. Isabella Tierney (15 points) and Rachel Kandefer (12) led EG (3-6,1-2).
Maine West 52, Maine East 18: Angela Dugalic (20 points, 4 steals, 5 rebounds), Dylan Van Fleet (8 points, 5 steals, 3 assists) and Rachel Kent (8 points, 4 steals) led the state's top-ranked Class 4A team (14-0, 4-0) in the CSL North match in Des Plaines.
Leyden 39, Addison Trail 30: Host Leyden (5-2, 2-2) was led by Jamyah Tate (13 points) and Evelyn Abundes (12) in the West Suburban Gold triumph on 'Pack the Place' night.
