Holmes steps up for Benet in tournament win vs. York

Junior guard Kendall Holmes was the "next player up" for Benet in Wednesday's home game against York.

With numerous scorers in his rotation, Benet coach Joe Kilbride acknowledged he often doesn't know which player will step up from game to game.

It was Holmes' turn against the Dukes.

Holmes opened her scoring with a 3-pointer, totaling 8 points in the first quarter to finish with a team-high 17 points in a 56-40 win in the Benet/Naperville North Holiday Tournament.

The Redwings (11-2) also received 16 points from Clara Prasse and 12 from Brooke Schramek. But Holmes shot 5 for 9 from the field, including 2 for 4 on 3s to lead the Redwings. Kathleen Levins paced the Dukes (9-3) with 19 points.

"She's had a few (big games)," Kilbride said of Holmes. "She's shot the ball a little inconsistently but also really well on several occasions. We have so many kids that are right around 10 points per game. One night, Holmes has 18. On another night, Brooke has 20 and Stack has led us in scoring a couple of times. (Ashley) Konkle has. There are probably seven kids who have led us in scoring, so it's like we were hunting for who has it going every night and let's feed the beast."

Holmes credited her big game to hitting her first few shots in the first half. The Dukes managed to cut a 5-point deficit to 9-8 late in the first quarter before Benet reeled off an 13-5 run to seize a 22-13 lead following a basket by Holmes early in the second.

"We really wanted to bring in an intensity tonight that was better than the other team and start off strong," Holmes said. "My teammates were able to knock down some shots and get on the glass and push the ball well."

Prasse said Holmes is a player capable of big scoring games. Holmes buried a 3 to pad the lead to 34-20 early in the third. The Redwings built a 43-29 lead after Schramek's lay-in at the end of the third.

"Kendall is a hot hand, and I knew right off the bat when she made (that) first 3, she was going to be feeling it tonight and I was trying to look for her all game," Prasse said.

The Redwings did not make a field goal in the fourth quarter but pulled away by hitting their free throws and forcing 5 turnovers.

"We shot poorly collectively, but I thought our defense was pretty good and we did a better job on the glass in the second half," Kilbride said.
