Dundee-Crown rallies past McHenry

Dundee-Crown saved its best shot for last.

Trailing McHenry 18-10 at halftime and 29-27 after three quarters, the Chargers outscored the visiting Warriors 15-6 in the fourth quarter and rallied for a 42-35 victory in Fox Valley Conference play in Carpentersville Tuesday night.

D-C moves to 7-3 overall and have a perfect 4-0 slate in the FVC.

"It was an ugly four quarters and we are not satisfied with the way we played," said Chargers coach Sarah Miller. "We found a way to win. We stepped up in the fourth quarter. The bar is high and we didn't meet it tonight. Give McHenry credit. They did a great job of executing their game plan."

The Chargers sophomore duo of Gianine Boado and Alyssa Crenshaw came up huge in the pivotal fourth combining for 12 of the Chargers' 15 points.

Boado hit 2 crucial 3-point baskets for 6 points and Crenshaw muscled her way to 3 baskets and 6 points in the final quarter.

"We want Gianine to shoot more because she has a good 3-point shot," said Miller. "We want Alyssa to post up and take the ball inside to score. Both really stepped up when we needed them."

Crenshaw, who shared team scoring honors with Payton Schmidt at 12 points, also grabbed 9 rebounds.

"Coach (Miller) wants me to sit more in the lane and post up." said Crenshaw. "My teammates did a great job of getting me the ball in good position to score."

Down to McHenry 32-29 with 4:40 left the Chargers went on a pivotal 8-0 run spearheaded by a pair of 3s from Boado and a layup by reserve Alaina Azar pulled D-C up 37-32 with 4:10 remaining in the game.

"D-C went on two 8-0 runs in the second half and we played poorly for three minutes," said McHenry coach Rob Niemic. "We played great for 29 minutes, but to beat a team like D-C on the road you have to play 32 minutes. It is a testament to our team how hard we played and stayed in the game against a very good D-C team on the road."

Playing without top scorer Ava Interrante. Ashley Wachter scored 16 with a 3 and Isabel Gscheidle tallied 13 with a basket beyond the arc. Wachter and Gscheidle combined for 29 of McHenry's 35 points.

McHenry converted 9-of-30 shots for 30 percent and were 2-of-10 from beyond the arc for 20 percent.

"Playing without Ava, Ashley and Isabel really stepped up and played very well and kept us in the game." said Niemic. "D-C is a very good team and was a little better tonight."
