Metea Valley's Helwig earns MVP honors

Metea Valley senior Ethan Helwig has been named the Daily Herald boys basketball MVP for his performance last week.

Ethan Helwig, Metea Valley: Pacing Metea's 3-1 record at Wheaton Academy, the 6-foot-4 senior wing earned all-tournament honors after averaging 25.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.5 steals. Helwig's 38 points against Streamwood set the Mustangs' scoring record and he grabbed a personal-best 11 rebounds against Bartlett.

Kimahri Wilson, Carmel Catholic: The sophomore point guard put together an all-area campaign last winter and might be even better this season. He followed up a career-high 30-point effort against Boylan Catholic by pouring in 36 points against North Lawndale to lead the Corsairs to the Grant tournament championship with a 3-1 record. He averaged 25 points in four games and was named MVP of the tourney.

Kam Craft, Buffalo Grove: The Bison's 6-foot-4 freshman burst onto the varsity scene with a bang in the Bison Classic, averaging just over 25 points per game in leading his team to a 2-2 start to the season. His high game was 31 in a season-opening 79-75 win over Grayslake Central. He also had games of 28, 28 and 19 in the tournament.

Matt Reall, Crystal Lake South: The 6-foot-5 senior earned tournament MVP honors after leading the Gators to a 4-0 record and tourney title at the Johnsburg/Richmond-Burton Thanksgiving basketball tournament. Reall made two go-ahead shots in the final minute during the tournament while averaging 18 points per game, hitting 28 of 54 shots from the field (51.8 percent), 7 of 16 (43.8 percent) from 3-point range, and adding 17 rebounds, 10 assists, 12 steals and 5 blocked shots.
