Glenbard West rolls past Metea Valley

Fresh off a District 87 Tournament championship, the Glenbard West boys basketball team kept the train rolling with a 79-49 victory over Metea Valley Wednesday night in Glen Ellyn.

The Hilltoppers were on fire from the perimeter, knocking down 11 3-pointers and improving to 4-0 on the young season.

"We did shoot the ball well," said Glenbard West coach Tim Hoder, whose team has won all four games by double digits. "That helps. We've been shooting the ball well early."

Evan Taylor nearly posted a triple-double, finishing with 26 points, 14 rebounds and 7 blocked shots. He scored 11 of his points in the first quarter as the home team used a 12-0 run to lead 25-10.

"The most important thing was getting back at this team," said Taylor, who made four 3s. "They beat us bad last year. That really drove us plus our tournament win. We really wanted to beat them.

"Everyone was making shots. We've been shooting like that in practice. We are confident with everyone coming on the floor; I trust everybody."

Caden Phillips added 17 points, including a pair of baskets in the second quarter as the advantage swelled to 43-23 by halftime. Glenbard West led 62-37 heading into the fourth.

"Our team motto this year is 'step up,' and a lot of guys are doing that this year," Phillips said. "We are getting a lot of opportunities for others to score, and it's been working well for us so far."

Griffin Foster chipped in with 11 points, knocking down a trio of 3-pointers, and Carter Lindstrom had 9 points and 7 rebounds.

Ethan Helwig led the Mustangs (3-2) with 19 points and Myles Leavy had 9 points.

"They are solid in every facet of the game," Metea Valley coach Matt Walpole said. "They took it to us and dictated the tempo. Tip your cap to them. It's one of those things, it's a wakeup call. We have to regroup and take it as a learning experience."
