Oswego East comes back to beat Prospect

Prospect never trailed in the first 34 minutes of its second-round game of the York girls basketball tournament in Elmhurst on Tuesday.

But 2 free throws by Oswego East's Abby Ford gave her team a 42-41 lead with 1:59 left and were part of a 19-2 run by the Wolves to close out the game for a 50-41 triumph.

Only two days into the season, the Wolves are already earning the title of comeback kids.

They trailed Prospect by 10 points late in the third quarter.

One day earlier, they rallied from a 13-point deficit after three quarters in a 53-48 win over Trinity, which will be the Knights' opponent on Thursday when the tourney resumes.

"I think Trinity will be a really good game," said Knights senior Abbey Danciu, who had a nice game herself with 8 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. "It looks like they have some talent. We have to get beck to our game and I think we'll be good."

The Knights (1-1) were very good until the final quarter on Tuesday when they were outscored 21-2.

"We were down 13 points against Trinity so our girls knew they could come back," said Oswego East coach Abe Carretto, who received a game-high 20 points from his junior guard Christine Corpuz "I thought Prospect played with a lot of intensity and did a nice job with its defense."

As usual, Stephanie Kowalczyk was a defensive catalyst. The senior guard also showed her offensive skills, sharing team scoring honors with classmate Ashley Adams. They each had 10 points.

"Stephanie Kowalczyk has been fantastic defensively," said Knights coach Marie Miller. "Abbey (Danciu) played well and Eliot Dujotrek, our sophomore, came in and did a great job."

Adams took an alert pass inside from classmate Tia Sadlon and converted a layup to give Prospect a 39-29 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Wolves (2-0) started the final quarter with an 8-0 run before Jessica Kowalczyk took a nice pass inside from Danciu and converted a layup to give Prospect its final lead at 41-39.

"We have to stay a little more composed and we have to make better adjustments to the other team's defense," Danciu said. "It's still early in the season and we've just got to learn those things."

"We watched them (Oswego East) a little against Trinity when they came back," Miller said. "They are no slouch. They're a great team but we are, too. Sometimes it just isn't your night and this was one of them. Turnovers led to chances for them and they had 19 points alone on free throws.

"The good thing is that we've got things to work on in practice (Wednesday) and we'll be ready to go on Thursday."
