CCAC concurs: Kerr is top freshman
Grant graduate John Kerr couldn't have kicked off his rookie season at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, in much better fashion.
The 6-foot-7 freshman forward from Lake Villa was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball Freshman of the Year.
Kerr also received honorable mention all-conference after a tremendous freshman campaign.
He averaged 12.3 points and 7.5 rebounds, both the top marks among all freshmen in the conference.
He is currently fifth overall in the conference in rebounding and placed ninth in the CCAC in field-goal percentage (. 560) and 12th in free throw percentage (. 769).
His 2.6 offensive rebounds per contest rank fifth in the league and 45th nationally.
Kerr scored in double figures in 22 of the team's 30 games, and reached at least 20 points twice, including a season-best 27-point performance on 10-of-13 shooting in a December win over Trinity Christian.
He grabbed double-digit rebounds in eight games, including three games of 14 boards, and posted eight double-doubles.

The two-way player also had 40 tackles (5 for a loss) at linebacker. He had an interception, which he returned for a 13-yard touchdown and a fumble recovery, which he returned for a 61-yard touchdown. "Joey is the heart and soul of our team, both in practice and on game days," Lake Zurich coach Luke Mertens said after the season. "People always comment to me how hard Joey plays. I wish those same people could watch him practice because he amps it up even more Monday through Thursday."
