Naperville Central's Schmid earns MVP selection
Naperville Central junior forward Lucy Schmid has earned Daily Herald MVP honors for her recent high school girls basketball performances.
Lucy Schmid, Naperville Central: The junior forward helped the Redhawks clinch a share of the DuPage Valley Conference championship. She scored 21 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in a victory against Naperville North, then followed that with 14 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 blocked shots at Wheaton North.
Mariel Franco, St. Edward: Called "the team's spark," by coach Michelle Dawson, this 5-foot-8 senior came through with a career game when the Lady Wave needed it the most. One game behind Walther Christian in the Metro Suburban Red heading into the final conference game, Franco scored 26 points with four 3-pointers and 3 assists, leading St. Edward to a 66-57 win and a co-championship. Franco also scored 8 points Saturday as St. Edward knocked off St. Viator.
Mallory Harrity, Grant: The four-year varsity player has emerged as one of the best post players in Lake County. She posted back-to-back efforts of 23 points in wins over Lakes (55-46) and Grayslake North (63-34). The 6-footer then scored 14 points, as the Bulldogs defeated Wauconda 68-64 for their sixth win in a row.
Melissa Spiwak, Rolling Meadows: The senior guard chose a perfect time for one of her top career games. Her 19 points, 7 assists and 6 steals helped Meadows to a 69-56 victory over Prospect which gave the Mustangs a share of the Mid-Suburban East crown. Spiwak came back with 21 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 steals in a 59-45 win over Fremd.
