Larkin's Shaw earns MVP honor

Larkin senior standout Jalen Shaw has earned Daily Herald MVP honors for his recent high school boys basketball performances.

Jalen Shaw, Larkin: This 6-foot-10 senior was a major factor in 3 victories, including 2 road wins that lifted Larkin to the Upstate Eight River title. He led the Royals with 22 points and 8 rebounds in a 58-53 victory at Geneva. Three nights later he scored 22 points, grabbed 18 rebounds and blocked 5 shots in a 61-60 victory over Rockford Lutheran. The following night in Batavia, Shaw paced the Royals in points (20), rebounds (8) and blocked shots (5) as Larkin (17-6, 9-0) prevailed 52-50 to clinch its first league championship since 2013-14.

Ethan Helwig, Metea Valley: The Mustangs junior guard scored a total of 47 points and shot 17 of 31 from the field in two DuPage Valley Conference victories. He scored 23 points with 6 rebounds against Naperville Central. Helwig added 24 points, 7 assists and 5 steals in an 88-80 double-overtime win against Wheaton North.

Peter Lambesis, St. Viator: Performances like the one the Lions got from their 6-foot-4 senior forward Friday at St. Patrick are why St. Viator has yet to be beaten by an East Suburban Catholic Conference foe. Lambesis came up with a game-high 22 points, which included a pair of dunks, to help the Lions to a 55-40 victory over the Shamrocks.

Tommy Marcotte, Mundelein: A veteran stepped up to help the Mustangs get back on the winning track. The four-year varsity guard scored a team-high 20 points in a 73-49 win over Zion-Benton, as the Mustangs snapped a five-game losing streak and climbed a game above the .500 mark. He also led the team in scoring with 13 points against Glenbrook North.
