Lake Zurich takes over late against Lake Forest

OK, so it wasn't the best start for the Lake Zurich girls basketball team on Friday night.

"At the beginning, it was a little rocky," said Lake Zurich senior McKenna Zobel. "We were expecting a zone and Lake Forest came out in a man-to-man."

As a result, 20-game winner Lake Forest had an early 8-3 lead. The Scouts still had a 21-15 lead in the third quarter.

And then the fourth quarter kicked off.

Zobel had 4 points in a row. Junior guard Anna Biergans nailed 7 free throws. Lake Zurich (15-9, 10-3) followed up an impressive win over Warren with a 40-34 win over the Scouts on Friday night in North Suburban Conference play at Lake Zurich.

"We had a really good fourth quarter, Zobel added. "We were posting up and rebounding well."

Lake Zurich coach Chris Bennett, was clearly pleased with his team's play down the stretch.

"McKenna had some great post moves," Bennett said. "And we made our free throws."

Making 7 of 8 free throws was Biergans.

"We practice our free throws every day," Biergans said. "We compete in the free throw contests. Coach Bennett told us to relax out there in the fourth quarter."

A low-scoring first half had the Scouts up by a basket at 17-15. Zobel, who is fielding a few college offers, scored in the final minute.

Maddy Piggott (8 points, 5 rebounds) had 6 of her points in the third quarter as the Bears cut into the Lake Forest lead. Grace Kinsey had 3 of her 5 points in the third and it was knotted at 26-26.

"I think we will be a threat in the playoffs," Biergans said. "I think we can do well in the regional and sectionals."

Lake Forest's last lead of the game came on a 3-pointer from Veronica Giordano.

That lead didn't last long. Margueret Spear nailed a 3 to tie it at 29-29. Zobel's work inside and Biergans' deadeye shooting from the foul line led the Bears on an 8-0 run.

Zobel led the game in scoring with her 12 points. Lake Forest was paced by 9 points from 6-foot-1 point guard Halle Douglass.
