This time Jacobsen beats the buzzer for Palatine

Just three days after winning on Kendra Lindell's buzzer shot against Fremd, Anja Jacobsen took her turn at the last-second dramatics for Palatine's girls basketball team.

Jacobsen's 20-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer lifted Palatine past host Barrington 35-32 on Friday night and it gave the Pirates sole possession of first place in the Mid-Suburban West.

Palatine (18-7) improved to 6-2, one game better than Conant and Fremd, who each stand at 5-3.

It was Jacobsen's only 3-pointer of the game.

Just three days earlier, she hit three 3-pointers in the emotional 43-42 win over Fremd.

Palatine tailed 23-20 at intermission at Barrington.

"Our girls hung in there and Anja hit a big shot for the win," said Pirates coach Mark Johnson, whose club hosts Stevenson (13-10) at 2:30 p.m. today. "Barrington's girls played super defense all night long and kept us in check."

"Boy, what a great game," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro, who wins her 400th career game two weeks ago. "Credit Palatine with hitting the last-second shot again, but honestly I was very pleased with my kids really from start to finish."

Sydney Rzepka led Palatine with 8 points followed by Jacobsen (7). Kacie Filian and Lindell each chipped in 4 points while Jenny Myslinski also hit a 3-pointer and Tiana Henderson scored a bucket.

"In the end, the girls executed a great baseline play and then got a turnover to put them in position to win" Johnson said.

Sophomore Taylor Thompson led the Fillies (8-14, 4-4) with 15 points followed by Shanna Turczynski (6) and Tori Meyer (4). Anna Mae King fired home a 3-pointer for the Fillies.

"The atmosphere tonight and the gustiness from both teams was great," Barreiro added. "Taylor Thompson had a great night with her 15 points and a ton of rebounds. She was quite a presence. I thought we did a great job handling their pressure on the press. The kids did everything we asked. It was a tough one to lose."

Rolling Meadows 61, Wheeling 46: Rolling Meadows (17-7, 7-1) remained 1 game in front of Hersey and Prospect in the MSL East.

Melissa Spiwak (14 points, 4 steals, 3 assists), Lily Greifenstein (12 points, 3 steals, 3 rebounds, 3 assists), Susannah Holifield (12 points, 5 rebounds), Bridget Rolla (12 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals) and Alexa Davis (8 points, 5 assists, 3 steals) helped lead the Mustangs.

Wheeling (12-11, 2-6) was led by Nansy Velev, who scored 16 points with four 3-pointers. Nosa Igiehon added 15 points and Morgan Collar 7.

Hersey 57, Elk Grove 32: Balanced scoring and a stingy defensive effort helped host Hersey prevail in MSL East action. Emily Collins and Mary Kate Fahey had 11 points apiece to pace the Huskies, and Erin McGrath finished with 10 and 7 assists.

Hersey (12-11, 6-2) held Elk Grove (11-13, 2-6) to single-digit scoring in the each of the last three quarters.

Maesyn Benjamin had 5 steals for the Huskies while Jeannine Boyan collected 6 rebounds.

The Grenadiers got a game-high 13 points from freshman guard Isabella Tierney.

Prospect 57, Buffalo Grove 49: Jessica Kowalczyk (17 points), Ashley Adams (13) and Emily Frasco (9) led Prospect (12-8, 6-2) in the MSL East win. Helen Siavelis, Margherite Pettenuzzo, Kowalczyk and Sara Biesterfeldt each had 3 pointer for the Knights.

"It was another good test for us," said Prospect coach Gabrielle Lovin. "Buffalo Grove is well coached and shoots a lot of 3-pointers. They rebound well off them and they drive hard. Those three things combined is hard to stop."

The Knights rallied from a 10-point first half deficit.

"That really tested us," Lovin said. "Helen and Abbey subbed in and lit a huge fire for us on the defensive end and it carried over to the offensive side. Ashley had two big free throws to start us running down hill. Jessica had a great game as well hitting two clutch 3-pointers. It is truly fun to watch when we play together and have intense defense."

Buffalo Grove (5-21, 1-7) hit six 3-pointers in the game.

Maine West 64, Deerfield 22: The Central Suburban North leaders showed no sign of letting up in a decisive league victory at home.

Maine West improved to 22-1 and 8-0 as Alisa Fallon (12 points), Angela Dugalic (12 points, 9 rebounds) and Rachel Kent (10 points, 5 assists, 5 steals) were top scorers. Fallon hit a pair of 3-pointers while Catherine Johnson (7 points, 7 steals) and Kent each had one.
