Keefe takes key role in DePauw's impressive season

Libertyville graduate Claire Keefe led DePauw University with 18 points in a 53-40 win at Oberlin as the ninth-ranked Tigers extended their winning streak to 12 games.

The 6-foot freshman forward scored DePauw's final points with a pair of free throws in the final minute as the Tigers raised their record to 16-1 overall and 8-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

The Tigers never trailed in the game and outscored Oberlin 11-3 over the final four minutes of the opening quarter to take a 19-9 lead after the first quarter.

Keefe surpassed 1,000 career points at Libertyville where she was a three-time all-conference and two-time all-area selection.

Men's track

Augustana senior Kevin Barbian (Libertyville) was third in the shot (49-1½) and sixth in the weight toss (47-8½) at the Midwest Invitational in Monmouth.

The Vikings won nine events and had multiple place winners in 12 individual events.

Vikings junior Rob Williams (Vernon Hills) was fourth in the 3000-meter (9:16.27) while senior Kyle Hucker (Wauconda) placed second (:35.63) in the 300-meter run.

Football

Congrats to Mundelein receiver Isaac Wellman who announced his commitment to Robert Morris University on twitter.

The Daily Herald honorable mention all-area selection thanked the Mundelein and Waukegan football programs along with Jeff Christensen, Preston Earl, Nick Minogue and the rest of the staff at ThrowItDeep for pursuing his dream and perfecting his craft.

Men's basketball

Villanova junior guard Jalen Brunson (Stevenson) led the top-ranked Wildcats (17-1, 5-1 in the BIG EAST) with 18 points and 7 assists in an 88-56 victory over Georgetown in a BIG EAST clash at Capital One Arena. The Wildcats led by as many as 42 points in the second half.

It was the Wildcats' largest margin of victory over Georgetown (12-6, 2-5) as they led by as many as 42 points in the second half.

Brunson came back with a game-high 23 points as the Wildcats (18-1) cruised to an 81-61 victory over Connecticut at the XL Center in Hartford, CN.

Men's volleyball

The men's volleyball era at Augustana got underway with Benedictine defeating the Vikings 25-15, 25-19 and 25-18 at the Dan and Ada Center in Lisle.

Augustana freshman Ryan Hirschel (Libertyville) had match highs of 24 assists and 3 blocks.

Hirschel came back in the Vikings inaugural home match on Saturday to collect 45 assists in a 25-20 25-19, 12-25, 25-16 win over Judson at the Carver Center.

Women's track

Augustana junior Mackenzie Renihan (Vernon Hills) was clocked in 11:04.43 while winning the 3000-meter run. as the Vikings took second place at North Central's Cardinal Opener at Al B. Carius Track.

Wisconsin-Oshkosh claimed the team title with 151 points, followed by the Vikings with 130.5.

Renihan led a contingent of five Vikings who scored in the 3000-meter.
