Familiar setting, but Fremd falls short vs. Ignatius

Fremd girls basketball coach Dave Yates got to relive some memories when his Vikings played St. Ignatius in the old gymnasium, now called Alumni Gym, at Benet High School on Saturday afternoon.

When he was a student at St. Edward High School, Yates played for the Green Wave boys basketball team in Alumni Gym, which is now the secondary gym to a bigger arena just to the west.

While the Vikings didn't provide their coach a winning homecoming, Yates was still encouraged by the performance, which did not include sophomore standout Emily Klaczek (unavailable for the game).

"To play a team like St. Ignatius (14-3) down to the last possession without our leading scorer, I was really pleased by our play," said Yates, whose club connected for nine 3-pointers) and stayed close throughout before dropping a 59-55 decision to the Wolfpack at the Chicagoland Invitational Showcase held in Lisle.

Sophomore Caroline Cochran led the Vikings (10-7) with 15 points, and three 3-pointers.

Other top scores were junior Angie Zara (10 points, two 3-pointers), senior Alyssa Honickel (9 points, one 3-pointer), freshman Grace LaBarge (8 points, two 3-pointers) and sophomore Olivia Hill (7 points).

"We had great balance in our scoring," said Yates, whose team also got a 3-pointer from Ella Burns. "We shot the ball really well. We had a great look with four seconds let to tie the game but we couldn't get it to fall."

Fremd visits Prospect (9-6) in a Mid-Suburban League crossover on Tuesday night.

Other crossovers on Tuesday are Barrington at Wheeling, Conant at Buffalo Grove, Hersey at Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates at Rolling Meadows and Palatine at Elk Grove.

All games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Division play continues on Friday night when the girls games begin at 7:30 p.m. following the 6 p.m. boys games.

The East schedule includes Hersey at Rolling Meadows, Prospect at Wheeling and Elk Grove at Buffalo Grove. In the West, it will be Barrington at Fremd, Hoffman Estates at Conant and Schaumburg at Palatine.
