Lemont denies Mundelein in semifinals at DeKalb

Mundelein's boys basketball team was looking Friday night to continue its hot start in DeKalb's Chuck Dayton Holiday Classic and earn a championship-game berth.

The Mustangs fell just short, as Lemont pulled out a 67-62 win.

Freshman guard Conor Enright led Mundelein (8-4, 2-1 tourney) with 18 points and 7 assists. Jeff Bikus added 13 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks, James Willman finished with 12 points, and Andrew Silva contributed 11 points.

Mundelein closes out the tourney at 6:30 p.m. Saturday against Schurz.

Lake Zurich 42, Pekin 40: At Pekin, Peter DiCerbo had 14 points and 6 rebounds, and the Bears captured the fifth-place championship.

Ryan Kutsor (3 assists), J.R. Cison and Will Tucker added 8 points apiece for Lake Zurich (9-4, 3-1 tournament). Cison and Tucker each hit a pair of 3-pointers. The difference in the game was the second quarter, when the Bears outscored Pekin 18-13 to lead 24-19 at halftime.

Alton 64, Carmel 61: At Centralia, the Corsairs' effort fell just short on Day 2 of the tournament, despite freshman Kimahri Wilson's game-high 18 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

Evan Myers added 16 points, making four 3-pointers, and 2 steals. Johnny Roeser had 12 points and 5 rebounds for the Corsairs, who were tied 49-49 after outscoring Alton 21-15 in the third quarter.

Carmel (7-4, 1-1 tournament) plays St. Louis Confluence Academy at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The winner advances to fifth-place game at 4:30 p.m.

Maine South 66, Stevenson 64 (2 OT): At Hinsdale Central, the Patriots dropped their second game in as many days, as the Hawks secured a spot in the fifth-place game of the Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic.

Maine South (9-3) opened up a 25-17 lead at the half but had to rally after Stevenson (7-6, 1-2 tourney) used a barrage of 3-pointers in the second half to surge in front by eight with just over two minutes remaining. Maine South scored the final eight points of the fourth quarter to pull even and force overtime as Stevenson missed two free throws down the stretch.

Maine South opened up a four-point cushion in the first OT, only to have Stevenson pull even and tie the contest. The Hawks scored the first four points of the second OT and never trailed. Maine South built a two-point cushion with six seconds left after splitting a pair of free throws. Stevenson's runner in the lane at the buzzer rimmed off, giving the Hawks the win.

Maine South shot 45 percent (24 of 53) from the floor and dominated the game inside, outscoring Stevenson 36-10 in the paint and outrebounding the Patriots 40-24. Essam Hamwi led the way with 20 points and 7 rebounds, while Grant Miller added a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds. Fillip Bulatovic totaled 15 points and 5 rebounds.

Stevenson set a single-game tournament record by hitting 16 3-pointers. The Patriots shot 43 percent (23 of 53) from the floor, including 50 percent (16 of 32) from downtown. Jackson Qualley led the way with 18 points and 5 rebounds, while Matthew Ambrose totaled 16 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Samvit Ram connected on five 3-pointers to score 15 points to go along with 4 assists.

Stevenson faces Rockford Auburn at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Warren 50, Joliet West 47: At Pontiac, the Blue Devils won their second game of the day, as Branden Ellis scored 17 points.

Adnan Sarancic had 11 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists for Warren (8-5), which entered the fourth quarter tied 30-30. The Blue Devils outscored Joliet West 20-17 in the final eight minutes.

Warren concludes the tournament at 4 p.m. Saturday against the winner of Saturday's 8 a.m. game between Plainfield North and Bloom.

Warren 59, Niles West 52: At Pontiac, Branden Ellis had a game-high 21 points on 9-of-17 shooting, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals, and the Blue Devils won their first of two games Friday.

Ian Schilling's 12 points came on four 3-pointers, as Warren (7-5) improved to 1-1 in the tournament and advanced to Friday's late game against Joliet West. Ryan Short grabbed 10 rebounds for the Blue Devils.

Charleston 71, Antioch 63: At Effingham, in the 11th-place game of the Christmas Classic co-hosted by Effingham and Teutopolis, the Sequoits trimmed a 40-32 halftime deficit to 58-52 after three quarters but couldn't rally for the win.

Antioch finished 0-3 in the tournament and fell to 4-6 overall.

Altamont 55, Antioch 48: At Teutopolis, in their first of two games Friday, the Sequoits couldn't protect a 24-20 lead at halftime and fell to 0-2 in the Christmas Classic co-hosted by Effingham and Teutopolis.

It was the fifth loss in a row for Antioch (4-5).

Maine West 85, Vernon Hills 54: At Wheeling, on Day 3 of the Hardwood Classic, the Cougars spotted the Warriors a 23-14 lead after one quarter, trailed 45-27 at halftime and 70-37 after three.

Payton Foster scored 11 points for Vernon Hills (4-9, 1-2 tourney), which concludes tournament play against host Wheeling at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Deerfield 65, Grayslake Central 54: At Wheeling, the Rams fell to 0-3 in the Hardwood Classic, as Warriors guard Alex Casieri led all scorers with 20 points.

Alec Novak had 15 points for Grayslake Central (5-7), which trailed 19-11 after one quarter, 35-22 at halftime and 51-35 after three. Jack Spalding had 11 points and 8 rebounds, and Antonio Crews added 9 points.

Grayslake Central finishes the tournament with a 9 a.m. tipoff Saturday against Dundee-Crown.
